August 2017

Welcome to our August e-news.

Our annual program begins

Twenty-five aspiring community and industry leaders have begun our ten-month leadership program which kicked off with an opening retreat at Lake Hume Resort in July.

We offer an intensive experiential learning program. It takes our participants across the region and beyond. We offer them the chance to experience the best practice in the factors that contribute to sustainable communities, to understand the innovative projects that are underway in our region, and to meet many of the individuals that drive these.

Brown Brothers Milawa Winery was the perfect venue for our first program day. Here, participants were able to explore the region's economy and to consider what works when it comes to strategies for sustainable businesses and jobs growth.

Ross Brown provided much food for thought in his presentation entitled 'wine, tourism and the local economy'. He encouraged participants to explore the links between leadership and the economy. Honorary graduate, Barry Sullivan, spoke about leadership in a business context, and Ovens Murray Regional Partnership Chair, Irene Grant, (AVCLP '99) talked us through the current and emerging regional priorities.

Thank you to Brown Brothers Winery, for sponsoring and hosting the first day for our 2017/18 group and for providing our winery tour. View the day's photo gallery here.

Leaders Luncheon with Christine Nixon

Former Victorian Chief Commissioner of Police and chair of the Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Authority Christine Nixon, needs no introduction to most Victorians.  Christine’s career is full of highs (and lows) and she will share her leadership experiences and wisdom with us at a special Leadership Lunch in Wangaratta on Friday, 1 September from 12-noon to 2 pm.  Tickets are $55 each. Alumni and their work colleagues, family and friends are invited to join us at this luncheon. Tickets here.

VRCLP State Leadership Summit

The Victorian Regional Community Leadership Program's annual conference will be held at Waurn Ponds near Geelong on Tuesday, 22 August.  Come along and be a part of the discussion on intergenerational leadership. Network with staff and graduates from other Community Leadership Programs - and listen in to The Great Debate!

The Great Debate? Get ready for Victoria’s biggest debate of intellect and strength, as two teams of local and national comedians reason, beg, borrow and steal to be the champions for 2017. The subject will be topical, controversial and divisive and the comedy will be free flowing, hard-hitting and at times incompatible.

On the negative team will be: Lawrence Mooney from Postcards, Have You Been Paying Attention, Agony Uncles and Dirty Laundry, and Nayuka Gorrie, a freelance social writer who has contributed to SBS Comedy, NITV and The Saturday Paper.

On the positive team will be: Fiona O'Loughlin, who started out as the winner of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s (MICF) Best Newcomer Award in 2001, and who has gone from there, together with Rob Braslin, a popular stand-up comedian who has also appeared in successful TV commercials and the ABC TV series Rosehaven.
