Politics frequently has an impact on Christian ministry. The effect of the recent elections in Kenya on the work of Burning Plow Ministries has been significant but far from devastating.
Becky and I left Kenya during this time, not because of potential unrest in the country, but because of urgent family business at home that needed our attention. Left in Kenya to continue the work of Burning Plow Ministries are 5 full time Kenyan men that God – one at a time – has joined together for the work of His Kingdom.
In preparation for anticipated violence, we stocked up with provisions in our Nairobi home for several of them and provided funds for their families to get out of the city and into their home villages where they would be safer.
This worked well and provided protection during the killings in Nairobi that followed the election. I’m glad to report that they are all safely home now. Our next obstacle has been food. Supply lines have been disrupted and food prices have sky-rocketed. Shadrack called me and reported that in his village of Kibwezi there is no food available for purchase at all which means that he must travel. Since public transportation has also been disrupted, travel has gotten expensive as well.
We have provided money to help with these things to all our Burning Plow personnel over and above their usual salaries. And I’m happy to report that from our supporters in America we have received extra donations that were not expected, but very welcomed, that are helping with these extra costs.
Our ministry team is daily assessing the situation in Kenya and making plans to jump right back into our ministry schedule without any more delay. Pray with us that “politics” will no longer be a hindrance but that we will be allowed the freedom and the safely we need to accomplish the mission that God has given.
