Options to Dispose of Household Batteries, Mercury & Pharmaceuticals

Do you have batteries, old mercury thermometers or thermostats, or old medications lying around?  If so, the City of Urbana has drop-off recycling options to properly dispose of those materials.

Batteries
There are five battery drop-off locations in Urbana, accepting single-use (alkaline) and rechargeable batteries.  The five locations are the Anita Purves Nature Center (1505 N. Broadway Ave.); Phillips Recreation Center (505 W. Stoughton St.); Urbana City Building (west entrance, 400 S. Vine St.); Urbana Free Library (near circulation desk, 210 W. Green St.); and Urbana Public Works (706 S Glover Ave.)

Battery types accepted include single-use alkaline, lithium, button cell and rechargeable batteries.  Lithium, button cell and rechargeable batteries must have terminal ends taped with clear tape for safety reasons.  (Continue reading here.)

National Cyber Security Awareness Month

Urbana’s IT division wishes everyone an informational “National Cyber Security Awareness Month”! You can find extensive help from the Department of Homeland Security at this website here, but here are our top three suggestions.

  1. Back up your devices regularly.  You can use local storage or an online backup site, but do it frequently.  Bonus tip: if you use local storage, unplug it when you’re not backing up.
  2. Use a password generator, and have different passwords for every site.  There are free tools that you can use for this, and it’s far simpler (and more secure) than writing down your passwords on a cheat sheet.
  3. If an e-mail looks suspicious, be wary!  Malicious e-mails are more sophisticated than ever.  If you receive an e-mail from someone with links or attachments that you weren’t expecting, then call them to see if it’s legit - because it’s probably not!

City Creates Savings on Leaf Collection

The City of Urbana aims to deliver high-quality public services in a budget constrained environment by pursuing lean and nimble service contracts.  The Public Works Department's recent leaf collection contract is no exception.

By separating out leaf collection services from other unrelated services that used to be bid together, the City received three bids on this service for the first time in many years.  In addition, the City has right-sized the number of leaf collections provided to residents. This means that fall collections will be reduced from four to three occurances and spring collections from two to one occurances. By driving more competition in the bidding process and optimizing the number of collections in the fall and spring seasons, the city expects to reduce annual leaf collection expenditures by 45% or roughly $16,000 per fiscal year.

To learn more about changes to the leaf collection process and the timeline for initiation of the new contracted services please contact Scott Tess, Environmental Sustainability Manager, by email or at 217/384-2381.
