FULLERTON COLLEGE ETHNIC STUDIES SUMMIT

The 3rd Annual Fullerton College Ethnic Studies summit is a free two-day public event that will bring together students, educators, scholars, organizers, activists, artists, and community leaders to explore this year’s theme “Liberation, Autonomy, and Self-Determination.”

Featured Speakers & Performers

Stephanie Mendez is the featured speaker at the Welcome Session on Friday 10/13 @ noon.

Stephanie Mendez is a writer and photographer for various news outlets including ABC News. She is an Orange County community organizer and musician who organizes local punk shows. 
 
After the Friday Welcome Session, Bocafloja will screen his film “Nana Dijo” followed by a Q&A with the audience. Plan to catch him at the Hip Hop Concert on Friday evening as he closes the first day of the summit, along with Rebels to the Grain. 

Bocafloja is a multi-disciplinary artist; film, music, poetry, photography, and theater are some of his mediums of creation. Decoloniality, Third Space Theory, Body Politics, African Diaspora in Latin America, and Intersectionality are fundamental topics addressed in his body of work. Bocafloja has been featured in BBC, NPR, AFROPUNK, CULTURESTRIKE, REMEZCLA, NACLA, MTV Iggy,  and many other newspapers, magazines and media outlets globally.

Rebels to the Grain will perform at the Hip Hop Concert on Friday evening. Doors open @ 5:00 PM. 
 
Rebels to the Grain are hip hop duo from Los Angeles. Their sounds are created to keep your mind and body moving in the direction of progress. Boom Bap hip hop, inspired by classic golden-era hip hop, reggae, and jazz (just to name a few) with a message for the masses of generation now. On Saturday nights they host the critically acclaimed, “Breakbeats & Rhymes Radio” on 90.7 FM KPFK from MIDNIGHT-2AM.
Come dance, socialize, and eat vegan tacos by Xicano Vegano as Chulita Vinyl Club Santa Ana spins records during "Chisme Hour," following the sessions on Friday 10/13 and Saturday 10/14. 

Chulita Vinyl Club was launched in December 2014 as an all-girl all-vinyl club for self-identifying womxn of color in the context of providing a space for empowerment and togetherness. They stand united as a female DJ collective spanning 7 national chapters bringing together a community of vinyl loving girls.

Aisha Mirza is the featured speaker at the Welcome Session on Saturday 10/14 @ noon and will facilitate a closed workshop following their talk.

Aisha Mirza is a writer and counselor from East London, living in Brooklyn, New York. They are interested in body hair, madness and race. They study the impact of microaggressions on the psyche of queer black and brown people.
Vander Von Odd will participate on the featured panel “Gender, Performance, and Drag Culture” on Saturday 10/14 @ 4:10-5:30 PM and emcee the drag show “A La Drag” at 6:30-9:00 PM where we'll close the summit in style! 

Vander Von Odd is a drag queen from a border town between Mexico & California. They won season 1 of the Boulet Brothers' Dragula and was crowned "The World's First Drag Supermonster."

Call for Proposals Open to September 13

We're still accepting proposals from students, faculty, artists, activists, and community members through Wednesday, September 13, 2017, as space permits. All topics are welcome, but proposals that address the summit’s theme will be given priority.
