Listen - From Humble Beginnings Sprung a National Celebration of College Football
News of the evening came from Berkeley as Cal AD Williams will not seek a new contract when his current deal expires in May of next year. Williams indicates he'll stick around until a new leader is hired or the end of his contract, "I made a three- or four-year commitment. It shouldn’t be a shock that I’m marking the end of my commitment to the campus." Chancellor Christ applauds Williams for "an unwavering commitment to their [student-athletes] welfare, and to the quality of their experiences in the classroom and their competitive arenas. I deeply appreciate his service." Financial acumen will be crucial for the next AD. (link, link)
Sticking in the Pac-12, Arizona State AD Anderson will get a contract extension to continue leading the Sun Devils, per Prez Crow. "I'm very happy with Ray, how he's performing. He's brought great coaches, great fundraising, great leadership to what we're doing. He's a tremendous asset to ASU." Anderson likes his fit with the university, calls it "validating" for Crow to be so supportive. Crow says losing records, like those the last two years for FB, are "unacceptable" & that HC Graham understands the expectations in Tempe. In addition to the exit of COO Harris to lead USA Triathlon, Chief Business Officer McElroy is retiring. Anderson indicates he's been planning for Harris' succession for the past year, has divided Harris' duties among other senior leaders internally. (link)
Incarnate Word is set to announces its new AD this morning at a 10:30a CST presser. A few rumblings were shuffling around last night, but no confirmed reports on who the new boss of the Cardinals may be. No indication on if the announcement will be live streamed. (link)
Virginia FB was in the middle of a scrimmage last Saturday when the state of emergency was declared, leading the Cavs to return to the McCue Center. HC Mendenhall says no prospective student-athletes or their parents have contacted him with concerns. AC Hagans indicates most communications with recruits has centered around the safety of current student-athletes. More Hagans: "Hatred and racism and ignorance exist throughout the world. Unfortunately, some people decided to bring it to our doorstep in Charlottesville. I just felt proud of the people that did it the right way, protested peacefully and stood up against ignorance. It's not tolerated here and it's not welcome here. That's not the Charlottesville that I know." (link); Florida FB HC McElwain on a white supremacist group that's looking to speak on campus in Gainesville early next month, "I think first and foremost, any extremist group, I don’t care – nationalist, whatever they’re called – is unacceptable. It’s just not what we believe in here. And yet I also understand freedom of speech. That’s what really our country was kind of founded on. We obviously do not in any way believe in any of their views. And I think our team understands that." (link)
Baylor AD Rhoades: "When I got to Baylor, we did not [drug] test. We did not have any robust program. We implemented it. It was one of the 105 Pepper Hamilton recommendation. Now I can tell you this: that we would have implemented a policy whether or not that was a recommendation." Since October of last year, 94 drug tests have been executed over 13 testing dates. Rhoades indicates a three strikes & you're out policy for offenders. (link); Former BU student Hernandez, who claimed the university ignored & mishandled her rape allegations, has settled with the school. Eight U.S. Senators call on the NCAA to formulate a uniform policy on how member institutions should handle prospective student-athletes with sexual violence in their backgrounds. Specifically, "As many of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA's) member colleges and conferences continue to change their policies to address prospective student-athletes with serious misconduct violations, we urge the commission to make recommendations that enable the NCAA to create a strong, uniform policy that addresses all prospective student-athletes." The Senators involved represent Oregon (x2), Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, New York, New Hampshire & Washington. (link); Here's the full letter & request. (link)
The hire of former DirecTV executive Shuken as the new Prez for Pac-12 Networks has many wondering if he'll be able to negotiate more carriage deals for the media player. As you know, one of the most significant gaps for Pac-12 Networks is a deal with DirecTV. Shuken earlier in the week on the topic, "To me, there’s a benefit there in that I understand what DirecTV’s overall objectives are, economically and serving their customers. […] DirecTV has openly and clearly positioned themselves as the place for sports fans. Given that, one would assume that with the right conversation and the right business relationship, both parties will be served well—all parties: the fans, the alums, the member universities and DirecTV subscribers—by us getting something done." Shuken also praises Pac-12 Commish Scott for "keeping the powder dry" & having maximum flexibility for the next round of TV negotiations. (link, link)

The Big East hosted its first Social & Digital Summit yesterday in Manhattan featuring representatives from all 10 member institutions & a litany of leaders from around the world of top digital brands. Facebook, Google, Instagram, YouTube, Major League Baseball, the NBA, Fox Sports, the New York Rangers, MIT & others were all involved. League CMO Wells Crandall: "Our schools have compelling stories to tell, especially when it comes to basketball, and our gathering focused on how best to use technology to bring information, special moments, and other content to our fans. UCF is sending a branded flag to all FB season ticket holders within their ticket packages for the upcoming season in a further push to be seen as Orlando's hometown team. AD White also notes a series of flags that will be promoted this season. White: "We’re appealing to their sense of civic pride... We could be like Ohio State is in Columbus. You don't need to be an Ohio State alum to cheer for the Buckeyes. Our home football games are for everyone." Georgia has generated $20M for its goal of $53M in private giving for the upgrades to Sanford Stadium, $6M of which is from the fundraising results for the new indoor practice facility that produced more than needed. Unlike projects at Florida & South Carolina where bonding will be leveraged, the Bulldogs are pushing for donations & reserves to cover the $63M total cost & do not want to add to its $85M debt commitments. (link); UGA AD McGarity says his SEC peers have constructive conversations on FB schedules as this year's home slate for the Bulldogs is void of traditional big names. McGarity also notes on guarantee games, "We’re all fighting for the same pool of teams. […] You’ve got to basically go pay teams to come play you. They’re sitting in a good seat right now, the Group of Five schools. They are able to kind of dictate the market." (link)
Duke Athletics raised $340M+ over the past seven years as part of its 'Building Championship' campaign that wrapped into the university's $3.85B 'Duke Forward' push. CEO Stack: "Pricing in the marketplace has become unpredictable and at times irrational. The retail market is currently influx. The environment is highly competitive and dynamic." However, the company still thinks it can win amid larger industry consolidation, will open 43 new locations this year. (link); Nielsen says it will dig deeper on viewership from the likes of Hulu, Facebook & YouTube to better measure the amount of traction & viewership on digital outlets. After selling 6,050 season tickets last year, JMU says 7K is "an achievable number" this year. As far as merchandise, JMU Bookstore Dir. Glenn says "the excitement went well into the spring after the national championship, and it’s starting to ramp up again. Leading up to the championship, everybody was looking to wear something with JMU on it. Then when [the Dukes] won the national championship, there was a plethora of championship merchandise." (link)
Old Dominion is on track to sell out FB season tickets for the ninth consecutive season & hopes to continue its 54-game streak of filling up Foreman Field.
