New Issue ASTHO at 75: Past, Present, and Future Directions
The September 2017 issue of the Journal of Public Health Management & Practice looks back on the 75th anniversary of ASTHO. “Since 1942, the Association of State and Territorial Officials has convened to transform public health within states and territories to help members dramatically improve health and wellness… devoting attention and resources to everything from infectious diseases to workforce development to disaster preparedness. Today, the association and its network of 21 affiliated organizations* are an integral part of the nation’s national public health system.”
Read about ASTHO’s milestones in Nancy Maddox’s commentary here. Don’t miss Paul Halverson and colleagues’ look at the high turnover rates of state and territorial health officials. And take note of “Beyond the Status Quo: 5 Strategic Moves to Position State and Territorial Public Health Agencies for an Uncertain Future,” co-authored by ASTHO Executive Director Michael Fraser and de Beaumont Foundation Chief Program and Strategy Officer Brian Castrucci. Finally, ASTHO President Jay Butler discusses this year’s “President’s Challenge: Public Health Approaches to Preventing Substance Misuse and Addiction.”
Featured Supplement – Environmental Health Tracking
Environmental public health tracking uses data collected on non-infectious disease to determine how exposure to certain environmental factors affects health. This special supplement, guest edited by Holly Wilson and Alex Charleston includes information on the utilization of programs, such as the CDC’s National Environmental Public Health Tracking Network and how it helps to inform public health policies and practices in efforts to reduce individual and societal burdens of illnesses. Dr. Ying Zhou and colleagues look at the cost of illnesses as well as patients' willingness to pay, and how the two can inform the potential public impact of  environmental illnesses.
