MAKING GOWANUS:
THEATER OF THE LIBERATED

BRIC, 647 Fulton Street, 7-9pm

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

Amid neighborhood change, Gowanus community leaders, artists and public housing residents are using arts and culture as a tool to organize and propel their voices. This Making Gowanus initiative has included the Gowanus All-Arts Forum, a 10-week long, multi-generational cultural platform, led by local artist Imani Gayle Gillison.

Culminating from the forum and community conversations comes MAKING GOWANUS: THEATER OF THE LIBERATED, a social justice performance & exhibit, on Wed, August 30, 7-9pm at BRIC, 647 Fulton Street, Brooklyn! The program is free and open to the public! All ages are welcome! It will feature the all-female Gowanus Wildcats Drill Team, who have been performing since 1970, and include artists from across NYC. Seats are limited. First come, first served.

Making Gowanus is an initiative to advocate for greater access to arts and cultural resources for public housing (NYCHA) residents in Gowanus. It is guided by a Steering Committee made up of a group of organizations, residents, community partners and community leaders from Gowanus, many of whom have been actively informing and responding to the proposed rezoning of the neighborhood. The community partners include Arts GowanusGroundswellFifth Avenue CommitteeGowanus Canal ConservancyTextile Arts Center, SpaceworksFUREE, Arts & Democracy, NOCD-NYBRICGowanus Houses Art Collective, Council Member Stephen Levin and Council Member Brad Lander.  The project is being led by Hester Street and has been generously funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, Council Member Brad Lander and NOCD-NY.

NOCD-NY came together in response to the vision, sustained needs, and creative resilience of our communities. Our leadership and network includes community based cultural centers, creative manufacturers, small arts organizations and businesses, artists, and community leaders. NOCD-NY works to strengthen and add value to the community-based programming of naturally occurring cultural districts and support cross fertilization between New York City neighborhoods and the artists and cultural organizations in them.
