Delegates of the California Indian Manpower Consortium, Inc. member tribes and organizations will convene for the 39th Annual Membership Meeting. This gathering will be held November 3-4, 2017 at the Pala Casino Spa and Resort in Pala, California.
A special session on Making the Most of Innovation and Opportunity in the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 3, 2017.

CIMC met with USDA Food and Nutrition Service

On July 13, 2017, CIMC had the pleasure of hosting a meeting with the high level leadership of the United States Department of Agriculture - Food and Nutrition Service (USDA-FNS) -- Kathie Ferguson, Acting Regional Administrator, Terry Gunnell, Deputy Regional Administrator and Michael Ladd, Regional Tribal Liaison.
Ms. Ferguson shared that there are a number of federal nutrition programs operating in and around Indian Country. Within the Western Region alone, there are 34 Indian tribal organizations administering Food Distribution Programs on Indian Reservations; three tribal entities administering Women, Infants, and Children programs; and many thousands of Native and indigenous populations impacted by Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The USDA-FNS works to end hunger and obesity through the administration of 15 federal nutrition programs. In partnership with State and Tribal governments, their programs serve one in four Americans in the course of a year. Working with their public, private and non-profit partners, their mission is to increase food security and reduce hunger by providing children and low-income people access to food, a healthy diet and nutrition education in a way that supports American agriculture and inspires public confidence.
The efforts of the USDA-FNS under Ms. Ferguson’s leadership to address food insecurity among Native populations will continue to be a priority of the USDA. The meeting with CIMC gave this USDA-FNS team an opportunity to share their experiences and explore partnership opportunities with CIMC. One potential area of joint interest is the SNAP Employment and Training program. While much of their work focuses on issues related to food security, in recent years they have begun to emphasize support for employment and training programs. This meeting was an opportunity to learn from CIMC successes in this area.

The CIMC Native Entrepreneur Training Program has announced training dates for the 2018 Leadership Training for Entrepreneurial / Small Business / Economic Development:

- February 21-22, 2018
- March 20-22-2018
- April 24-25, 2018
Applicants selected to receive traning must attend all four sessions to receive certification.

The CIMC Escondido Field Office hosted a Workin' with Traditions soft skills certificate training at the Pauma Indian Reservation on July 11-13, 2017. The Chicago Based Operations hosted a training on August 17-18, 2017. Training at the Paiute-Shoshone Cultural Center was provided by the Eastern Sierra Field Office on June 26-28, 2017. The Sacramento Field Office also conducted training on June 27-28, 2017.
Training topics included time management, conflict resolution, goal setting, reducing stress, and communication.

The CIMC Career Pathways for Native Youth Project had the opportunity to host a visit from Ms. Marjorie Fong, a Federal Project Officer with the U.S. Department of Labor on August 15, 2017. Ms. Fong had the opportunity to receive information on CIMC's project including design and governance, program and grant management systems, financial management systems, service/product delivery, and performance accountability.

The CIMC Career Pathways for Native Youth Project provides employment-related services to eligible Native American youth (ages 16-24) with limited or no work experience who reside in CIMC's service area. The project aims to increase career readiness via online training courses that include digital skills, financial education, soft skills, career pathways, and workforce essentials.

CIMC staff recently attended the 2017 Census Information Center (CIC) Annual Training Conference in Atlanta, Georgia on August 10-11, 2017. Training included updates on the upcoming 2020 Census, statistics in schools, field division partnership, the 2017 Economic Census, data communication and visualization, race and ethnicity updates, the content hub, how CICs are using census data, and how CICs can work better with regional Data Dissemination Specialists.
