Deagon Ward E-News

August 2017

The last few weeks have been a very busy time across the Deagon Ward with major events like the Einbunpin Festival running alongside other great events like the annual Pennies by the Sea Festival and the official opening of the Zillmere Eagles Clubhouse.

I attended the opening night of Bracken Ridge High's 2017 musical, Grease, which was brilliantly performed by an ensemble cast of very talented students. Well done to the staff, parents and volunteers who brought this production together.

I will be out and about in the community over the coming weeks with mobile offices and free community BBQs. Keep an eye on my Facebook Page for details closer to the date.

The Volunteer Marine Rescue community and emergency services expo is on again soon and will be bigger and better that last year. the expo will be held on Sunday 10 September. Hope to see you there!

Out and About in the Community

Einbunpin Festival

Thank you to the local residents and visitors who turned out in their thousands to mark the 2017 Einbunpin Festival. This year we celebrated our 26th Festival with the theme - Celebrating Our Community. We certainly celebrated it well with over 130 stalls, 4 entertainment areas and a record number of free children's activities. The Einbunpin Festival wouldn't be possible without the hardworking volunteers on our committee including entertainment coordinator Beth, Stalls Coordinator Avalon, Youth Stage Coordinator Roger and other committee members Jen, Fred, Kelly, Anne, Mary and Karen.

The festival is also supported by some very generous local sponsors including Brisbane City Council, ANZ Mobile Lending, Lend Lease, Stirling Hinchliffe, Northside Family Law, Snap Fitness Sandgate, Kuhn Corp Print, Bayside Star, Sandgate Guide, Out n About Photography and Bracken Ridge McDonalds.

Principal's Honour Roll

I had the pleasure of addressing the record number of Principal's Honour Roll students at Sandgate High recently. Some of the students have been on the Honour Roll every year they have been at Sandgate High - a great achievement! It was wonderful to see so many families there supporting the students. It's no wonder our local high schools perform so well!

Pennies by the Sea

Sandgate's annual Pennies by the Sea Festival celebrated a very special milestone this year, being the 200th anniversary of the bicycle. This unique festival grows every year attracting enthusiasts from across South East Queensland and gives people who are interested in the history of cycling an opportunity to learn lots about these amazing bikes. Well done to Aaron, Brett and the team of volunteers who bring this event together each year.

Qualtime Sensory Garden

Qualtime, a leading provider of Disability supports and services on the north side have recently opened their brand new outdoor sensory garden. based in Taigum, Qualtime have provided care for people living with a disability and their carers for over 22 years. This new garden will allow the clients to learn new skills, take a break or spend time with their families and friends. The whole garden was built by volunteers and staff at the centre.

Zillmere Eagles New Clubhouse

The Zillmere Eagles have recently re-opened their clubhouse at O'Callaghan Park. The clubhouse has been sitting unused for a few years now and with a large investment by Council and AFL Queensland, the Eagles have been able to refit the space with a new kitchen, seating and function space. Congratulations to the committee on your years of hard work in bringing this space back to its former glory. The Zillmere Eagles have such a proud history on the Northside and it's great to see this investment in the club making a difference for the club.

Lily's Big Milestone

I had the pleasure of attending Lily Bowley's 105th Birthday recently at All About Living in Brighton. Lily still lives at home in Sandgate with the assistance of organisations like All About Living who provide support services. Having been a local for many decades, Lily has certainly seen a lot of change in our community and said to always enjoy life!

Telstra Donates Tablets to Shorncliffe State School

I joined May Boisen from Telstra to donate three Samsung Galaxy Tablets to Shorncliffe State School's Library. The students will be able to use them to search the library catalogue and for e-reading. Until now the library only had one computer for the students to use. Thanks to Telstra for this generous contribution to a great local school!

A Night at the Opera in Sandgate

Join Opera Queensland at the Sandgate Town Hall on an adventure through Carmen, Madama Butterfly, Rigoletto, and Don Giovanni balanced by lighter, popular pieces along with plenty of anecdotes, laughs, and good times. Come along to experience the wonder, magic and joy of opera at close range.

Featuring OperaQ favourites - Emily Burke, Victoria Lambourn, Rosario La Spina and Shaun Brown - the performance will mix shining moments of operatic splendour with edgy cabaret-style performance at close range.

Laurie Jeays Lecture

The first annual Laurie Jeays Lecture will be held at the Sandgate Town Hall on August 25 this year, celebrating the legacy of an amazing local resident who dedicated his life to our local community.

I'm proud to be a host alongside Keep Sandgate Beautiful Association, SANDBAG, Sandgate Historical Society and Sandgate Uniting Church.

Laurie was a tireless campaigner for creating a sustainable society and this lecture will highlight the importance of that not only here in our local community, but more broadly too.
