A competitive edge
Fertility research could save cattle producers millions annually

The seeds for Paul Dyce’s animal science research were planted early in his life, while working on the family farm in Ontario, Canada. Fast-forward to Auburn University, where Dyce is conducting the research he envisioned, working to develop a relatively noninvasive test that can be used early in the production process to distinguish a fertile heifer from an infertile heifer.

Congresswoman visits WREC
From a new, high-yielding peanut variety to new weapons against pigweed, researchers showcased a broad range of their work during Alabama Congresswoman Martha Roby’s recent tour of the Wiregrass Research and Extension Center in Headland.

 

AAES center directors named
Two faculty members in Auburn University’s College of Agriculture have assumed leadership roles at separate multidisciplinary Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station research, education and development centers on the Auburn campus.
Research and teaching collaboration is "win-win"
An innovative contract that Auburn University College of Agriculture Dean Paul Patterson and J. Scott Angle, president and CEO of the International Fertilizer Development Center, or IFDC, signed Aug. 31 in Auburn paves the way for agricultural professionals in 100-plus developing countries to enroll in non-academic workshops and training courses from Auburn through distance education.

The Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station has 15 outlying research units located throughout the state, each representing a different soil type and climate region. Here's a snapshot of some of the research underway in Fairhope.
 
Gulf Coast Research and Extension Center
Grain Sorghum production has increased in the Southeast but a new pest, the sugarcane aphid, is causing problems for producers in the region. Insecticide evaluation trials are being conducted to determine the best products available to control this pest.

Agronomic Crops Webinar

Oct. 10, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.
The agronomic crops team from the Alabama Cooperative Extension System is conducting a series of monthly webinars for 2017. The webinars can be viewed live at 9 a.m. on the second Tuesday of each month. They are also being recorded so you can view each segment at your convenience. The Oct. 10 webinar will feature Grid Sampling; Plant Growth Regulators on Wheat; Fertilizing Cover Crops to Increase Residue; Grain Crops-Economic Outlook; and Canola/Carinata Update.

Alabama Forage Conference

Nov. 29
Cattle producers should make plans now to attend the 2017 Alabama Forage Conference Nov. 29 at Lakepoint State Park in Eufaula. The conference begins with registration at 8 a.m. and concludes at 3:30 p.m. In addition to the conference, there will be a pre-conference tour of the Wiregrass Research and Extension Center in Headland.

Precision Agriculture Workshop

Nov. 30
The Alabama Precision Agriculture Extension Program will present a precision ag workshop Nov. 30 at the E.V. Smith Research Center in Shorter. The event will feature precision ag sprayer and planter clinics and cover topics such as using soil sensors to schedule irrigation, calibrating yield monitors and using yield data.
