Lundy Adventure

This July, MARINElife were once again on Lundy Island, giving a group of our Wildlife Officers and Surveyors the opportunity to join our trainers, Rick Morris and Glynis Northwood-Long, and the charity’s patron, Maya Plass, for an informal five days of learning and exploration.

After a ferry ride over, the weekend kicked off with a Cetacean and Seabird Identification presentation, followed by a day of checking out the island’s puffins, guillemots, and razorbills, plus talks from Luke Sutton, who monitors Lundy’s Peregrine Falcons, and Grant from the Tavern on the island’s guillemot population.

As well as long walks, and a round-the-island boat trip, the course’s attendees got to go rock pooling and snorkelling.

It was a great few days, with our evening meals enjoyed in the company of dolphins, porpoises, Manx shearwaters, and gannets feeding off shore, and our journey home accompanied by common dolphins.

For a full round up of what our volunteers got up to, head over to our website.

MARINElife Apparel

We’re super excited to announce our new clothing line. If you’re looking for a t-shirt for the warm late summer days, a hoodie in preparation for the encroaching autumn chill, or a fancy reusable shopping tote bag, then we’ve got you covered.

We’ve got multiple sizes available, so check out our full range at teemill.

Also, you can still purchase eco-badger’s charity tee, with profits from each purchase being donated to us.

Rare Albatross Sighting

One of our surveyors was treated with a rare sighting last month, with a black-browed albatross being spotted during July’s Hull to Zeebrugge survey.

Even though the black-browed albatross is an Antarctic species, individual birds occasionally find their way to the North Atlantic, and there have been sightings of the species in Scotland and the Faroe Islands.

As our encounter was made when the ship was in Belgian waters, this could be the first accepted record of the species for the country.

In Other News: The JNCC Explores our MPAs

During the month of July, and continuing on through August, the JNCC have been highlighting the importance of the UK’s lesser-known marine life and habitats, and the initiatives being undertaken to conserve them for current and future generations.

The UK has a cold-water coral reef, deep-sea sponges, a biogenic reef formed by worms, and a subtidal mud habitat that provide a home for sea-pens and burrowing megafauna communities …. all protected via a network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).

New videos have been posted by the organisation every Monday, so check out their social media sites to find out more about what mysteries our waters have to offer.
