WEEKLY UPDATE

In this issue...
This Weekend

10:00 am Sunday Service

Poetry Sunday
Preaching ~ Bill Chene
Celebration Associate ~ Del Carpenter

Music Director ~ Jess Lieb
Greeter ~
Hospitality ~ Team Cunningham

It’s time once again for Poetry Sunday.  On this day most of our service will be devoted to anyone who wants to share either their own poetry or their favorite poems.  If you enjoy writing or reading poetry then Poetry Sunday is for you.  Our audience is always polite and accepting.  Here’s how it works.  Bring a poem or two to read to the congregation.  We always get to hear some really wonderful poems from both known authors and yes, poetry from our readers.  It can be a poem that you wrote or perhaps it could be a pick from your favorite poems.

There are very few rules.
  • Please, limit your readings to three to five minutes.  There will be additional time for second and third readings after everyone has had a chance to read.
  • Remember to follow basic rules of taste.  Please wait for everyone to get a chance to read before you have a second reading.
  • You don’t have to be a CVUU member to read.  As always, all newcomers and visitors are welcome and encouraged to participate.

Volunteers Needed for Pridefest
Saturday, August 26, 2017
As a sponsor of Pride Fest, the Cedar Valley Unitarian Universalists will again have an informational booth on August 26 in support of LGBT rights. As a Welcoming Congregation, we feel it is imperative that our LGBT brothers and sisters know that there are religious denominations that support them. Our presence at Pride Fest depends on volunteers to greet visitors to the booth, give out home-made cookies, provide rainbow face-painting, and answer questions about our congregation. If you are able to help staff the booth for a two-hour shift, or want to contribute cookies, please contact Sally Browne at 319-342-2753 or at sallyb758@gmail.com.  Or, sign up for a shift on the sign-up sheet available on the big bulletin board in the downstairs meeting hall at the CVUU.
Touchstone
Something NEW!
Our congregation has joined the Touchstone Project. This is a UU project to bring new reading and activities to UUs in church and at your home. Each month we will have a beautiful and inspiring Journal for you to enjoy at home . . . with daily readings, discussions for kids, and more!

SAVE THE DATE: JUNE 20 - 24, 2018

Planning has begun for General Assembly 2018 at the
Kansas City Convention Center in Kansas City, Missouri. The City of Fountains is practically overflowing with adventure. Whether it's the scent of smoldering BBQ luring you to a plate of ribs, the sweet echo of jazz welcoming an evening of entertainment or the spray of fountains inviting you to kick off your shoes and make a splash, you'll sense inspiration in the air - and find it along every boulevard.

As America's most centrally located major metropolitan area, Kansas City's location is a huge advantage for travelers. In fact, more than 55 million Americans can get to Kansas City in less than a day's drive. And flying here is even easier-as Kansas City International Airport is just a three-hour flight away from each coast. All major U.S. air carriers serve KCI, which offers more than 400 daily flights with nonstop service to 48 destinations.

If you are interested in proposing a program for GA 2018, proposal guidelines will be available in late September at

Community Information
Dear Friend of the Northeast Iowa Food Bank,
The Northeast Iowa Food Bank will be holding the 2017 Personal Care Drive from July 10 to August 17. During this event, local churches, organizations, and businesses will be collecting personal care items, such as soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, and diapers. The Personal Care drive will conclude with closing events at Cedar Valley Walmart and Fareway stores on August 5 and August 12, and at the Cedar Falls Natural Grocers on August 17. At these closing events, volunteers will hand out flyers about the Food Bank to shoppers and encourage them to donate to the Personal Care Drive.

An estimated 48,000 northeast Iowans struggle with food insecurity. Many of them also struggle to provide personal care items for their families, and government food assistance programs such as SNAP do not provide assistance for purchasing personal care items. No access to personal care items leads to poor hygiene, health issues among both adults and children, and damage to a family’s well-being.

Donated items will be distributed among over 200 local food pantries, soup kitchens, and other nonprofit agencies in 16 northeast Iowa counties. By supporting the Northeast Iowa Food Bank’s 2017 Personal Care Drive, you will be helping up to 48,000 northeast Iowans in need. If you would like to support the 2017 Personal Care Drive, please call us at (319)-235-0507 or email Sheri Huber-Otting at shuber.otting@feedingamerica.org. Thank you for your support of the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.

Sincerely,
Sheri Huber-Otting
