Welcoming the stranger: working with global communities, locally.
"...when did we see you a stranger and welcome you in? Truly, i say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these, you did it to me." Matthew 25:38, 40
August Update
Love Ignited was the theme at the RHP Roundtable. We made a new friend who also works with Peace Catalyst - David!
Summer at the Park
Laura had great expectations on how this was going to be a great way to connect with the ladies and children from the English Class through out the summer. Unfortunately it proved to be a bit more difficult than expected but that's the way it goes sometimes.  We still managed to gather together 4 times at various parks around Boise. The ladies were out of practice with English and one time Laura sat with a group of them and said they had to practice for at least 5 minutes. They all laughed and then we talked about what they would be serving for dinner that night! Sounded yummy! English class will be gearing back up in September. Nick continues to be our token male but he is good at engaging with the kids and keeping them occupied so the Moms can chat. We so appreciate the number of you that have come and made these park dates possible. Please pray for adequate volunteers and drivers to help the English  program run smoothly!

Refugee Highway Partnership
This year Nick, Laura, Michelle and Carolyn traveled to Irving, Texas to attend the Refugee Highway Partnership (RHP) Roundtable. The RHP is a global network of Christians who serve the forcibly displaced.  It was a great time to network with people from the U.S. and Canada doing similar work with us. It was inspiring to hear from Steve Bauman, Tom Albinson and Vickie Reddy, the plenary speakers. There are also break out sessions on specific topics and smaller groups. Glocal actually lead two of them: Muslim/Christian Peacebuilding and Best Practices of Training Volunteers! We are thankful that Carolyn joined us this year as she is becoming a part of our team here in Boise. She has served as a Glocal Friend Partner for almost a year and has been helping with the International Garden. We so appreciate her serving heart!
Glocal Partner Teams
We continue to be thankful for the many people who have been involved with families who have come as refugees. We have been having to seek new ways to partner people as the flow into Boise has slowed down considerably. Fortunately, we have found a few other avenues primarily partnering with families who have been here a year or more who were never partnered with a friend or just are in a place where some extra support and encouragement from a Boise friend would be a help.
Above is one of our new teams who hopefully will be partnered with a family in this coming week.
Baby Showers
Glocal has been ramping up their involvement in helping with baby showers to love on expecting or new moms who have come as refugees. Michelle has been helping out with a great group of ladies who have been doing this for several years at least once a quarter. We are hoping to add a few more to the calendar each year so that more women will be reached. We are so blessed as generous donors  have provided pack n plays, strollers, diapers and other miscellaneous items to help these new babies and moms. Diapers especially newborn and size 1 as well as wipes are always needed. The next baby shower will be held on Sept. 9. for 3 mothers (1 boy and 2 girls). If you are interested in getting involved with this sweet ministry, please contact Michelle at mmmlarson@gmail.com
Give Away Shed
Another new area of ministry that we are currently working on is having a designated shed with goods and items for homes that can be given to incoming families or families in need. So far we have the shed that is full of donated items from the closing of the World Relief office but we haven't worked out the best way to manage it all. We would appreciate prayer and wisdom for this area as it can be a great way to meet and engage with people who we have not been in contact with before.
Happy is the Mom when her Family is Altogether!
On a personal note we were able to have a 4 day staycation with our kiddos here in Boise. Annaliese and Matthew were able to journey over from Yakima and Lukas joined us from Arizona. We enjoyed time paddle boarding, playing games, eating lots of good food together with Matthew's family, Donna, Dave, Andrew and Grandma Ruth and of course Grandma Jan. Laura will be savoring the time we had together for months to come! It's hard having your kids grow up and move away!!
