FREE Family Foodies Workshop

Looking for a fun, free after-school activity?  Come along to a free Family Foodies workshop by a nutritionist to learn about healthy eating together with your family. 

Workshop topics include learning about energy needs, food choices, establishing healthy habits and making a healthy snack together.

The next Family Foodies workshop will be held on Wednesday 16 August, 3:30pm to 4:30pm, Toowoomba City Library (Level 3, Seminar Rooms).

New Konga Classes - Toowoomba & Highfields

Get together with friends and family and have a go at a new low-cost Konga class in Toowoomba and Highfields:
  • $3 Jungle Body Konga Kids - Wednesdays, 3:30pm, 9:15am, Highfields Sport & Recreation Park
  • $3 Jungle Body (Burn/Konga) Low Impact - Thursdays, 9:15am, Highfields Sport & Recreation Park
  • $5 Jungle Body Konga Kids - Tuesdays, 3:30pm, Trinity Church Hall, Toowoomba

Seed to Feed Workshops

Come along to a Seed to Feed workshop by Brian Sams to learn about growing fruit and veg in your backyard, patches and pots.  Workshops cost $5 and are held from 9am to 12noon on Saturdays.  Upcoming workshops: 
  • Goombungee - 26 August (Goombungee Hall)
  • Millmerran - 2 September (Millmerran Cultural Centre)
Everyone who attends a Seed to Feed workshop during 2017-18 goes into the draw to win a veggie patch boost by Brian Sams!

New Mum & Bub Classes
 
Come along to the new Mum & Bub Fitness classes at USQ Works, Baker St, Toowoomba.  Classes provide fun, safe and social opportunities for mums to get active with their little ones.
  • Suitable for 3 months to 3 years
  • Play space for older children
  • Parents room nearby
  • Buy one get one free coffee
  • Monthly ‘Paw Patrol’
A FREE trial class will be held on Monday 28 August, 10am to 11am, with $5 weekly classes commencing from Monday 4 September.

Oakey Colour Run

Get together with friends and family for a colourful fun-filled day at the Colour Run fundraiser event this Sunday 13 August (registrations from 9:15am) at Arthur Shooter Memorial Park, Stanley St, Oakey.

Better Health - Have Your Say

Darling Downs and West Moreton PHN is working to identify the health priorities for the region, develop local strategies and local commissioning programs to deliver better health outcomes for our community now and into the future.

Right now, they need your help to assess and understand the specific health needs in your community.  Have your say by completing their survey by 28 August 2017.

Toowoomba Languages & Cultures Festival

"One World Many Faces" is the theme of the Iconic Toowoomba Languages and Cultures (TLC Festival - an annual celebration of the diversity in our community and a showcase of talents and colour from across the world!

This year's event will celebrate all things Scottish, and will be held on Sunday 10 August 2017, 10am to 4pm at Queens Park.

Seniors Expo

Come along to the annual Seniors Expo for all things connected with seniors on Wednesday 23 August 2017, 8:30am to 2:30pm at the HumeRidge Church, 461 Hume St, Toowoomba.

Check out the CHANGE Project stall for a range of free and low-cost exercise classes, meditation sessions, walking groups and much more, all suitable for seniors.  This year Karen from Small Steps Nutrition will be on hand to answer any questions you have about healthy eating.

Recipe of the Month - Sweet Potato & Spinach Lasagne
6 servings     19 serves of veg     20m preparation     30m cooking

Ingredients
  • 500g pumpkin or sweet potato, peeled and sliced
  • 2 bunches English spinach or young silver beet, washed and sliced
  • 500g reduced-fat ricotta
  • 6 spring onions, sliced
  • ½ cup chopped parsley
  • 12 sheets instant lasagne, softened in hot water
  • 425g jar tomato pasta sauce
    Topping
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons plain flour
  • 2 cups low-fat milk
  • Pinch pepper and ground nutmeg to taste
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan or Romano cheese
Method
  1. Preheat oven to 180 °C.
  2. Steam the pumpkin for 3 minutes, then cool.
  3. Plunge spinach into boiling water until wilted and drain well to remove excess liquid.
  4. In a large bowl combine drained spinach, ricotta, onion and parsley.
  5. Arrange 3 sheets of lasagne on the base of an ovenproof pan (33cm x 23cm).
  6. Top with 1/3 each of pumpkin, tomato sauce and spinach ricotta mixture.
  7. Repeat twice and top with remaining lasagne sheets.
  8. To make topping, break eggs into flour and mix well to remove lumps.
  9. Whisk in milk, pour into a saucepan and bring to the boil, whisking until smooth and thickened.
  10. Add pepper, pour over top of lasagne and sprinkle with cheese.
  11. Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown.
