Unexpected Stories, by Octavia Butler
This is a small collection: it contains just a novella and a short story. But they are previously unknown short works from sci fi great Octavia Butler, and they definitely showcase her talent. Both stories draw you in from the start, immersing you in a different world that is believable and interesting. The characters are believable, too, and both stories kept me eagerly reading to the end. If you've never read any Butler before, these stories are a fine introduction. If you're already a Butler fan, you won't want to miss them.

There would still have been so much to see of things we knew were there to be seen. How much more of things unimagined, unexpected?

Excellent Things in Women, by Sara Suleri
This book is probably an excerpt from a longer memoir- it feels a bit out of context. Despite the disoriented feeling at the start, I really enjoyed this book. It is a memoir of postcolonial Pakistan, from the point of view of a woman who was at the time a child in a fairly well off household. The writing is beautiful, and one side effect of the way the book just starts without providing any background and then follows a narrative arc that is based more on the author's stream of consciousness than a linear timeline is that you are completely transported into its world. It is an interesting story, well-told, and well worth your time. (Also, it is currently free at Amazon and BN.com, so if you have a Kindle or a Nook, all you'll be spending to read it is your time.)

When I looked at the calendar this morning, I was surprised to realize that this will be going out on the second Sunday in August, and I missed my schedule for posting an August giveaway. I blame the speed with which the summer is passing. Already, I'm looking at back to school clothes for my kids and seeing other people's back to school pictures on social media. For various reasons, I won't have time to post a giveaway this weekend, so I think my one month giveaway break will turn into two months. I'll mark my calendar and try to remember to post a September giveaway. Meanwhile, I just checked, and the randomly chosen bonus book for this week is still free at Amazon, so maybe we can just consider this a giveaway everyone won?
OK, I agree, that's a stretch. I'll try to get back to normal next month. Thanks for reading!
