Supporting Student Science Talk

Want to make your science classroom more equitable? Support student science talk! Discourse can help all students become better scientific thinkers, make sense of their ideas about natural phenomena, and engage in science and engineering practices.

To support educators in this work, we’ve created a playlist of resources on student science talk. The playlist includes background on the importance of talk and resources to use in the classroom.

These resources might be especially helpful if used in a PD session or professional learning community, as they can be used to support problem solving and the sharing of strategies.

STEM Teaching Tools Translated into Spanish

Two of our tools have just been translated into Spanish! Read translations of Brief #27 on teaching science to ELL students and Brief #31 on strategies to launch investigations driven by student interest and community knowledge.

Thanks to Andrea Kolb and Amanda Lara for their great translation work and to Carla Zembal-Saul for arranging this effort.

What are STEM Teaching Tools?
STEM Teaching Tool 3

STEM Teaching Tools are short briefs designed to bring together ideas and resources to address common challenges as educators adopt the new vision for science education in the NRC Framework and resulting Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). These tools are helping thousands of educators across the country align their teaching with best practices from both research and teaching.

STEM Teaching tools are:

  • co-written by researchers and educators.
  • easily downloadable as PDFs.
  • updated regularly at stemteachingtools.org, with new briefs created in response to educator needs.
