Dear Friends,

The weather we have been having feels like spring has sprung! The fire hasn’t been on in almost a week and the cold southerly seems like a distant memory. Not wanting to jinx anything, but with our first seed sowing planned for August 17th we really do feel like spring is here! Why the 17th of August? According to the biodynamic calendar this is the point of the month when Moon opposition Saturn occurs.  This is the best all round seed sowing day of the month if you would like to get the help of the cosmos with seed germination.  Think higher tides at full moons, if you think that the cosmos has no effect on our natural systems.

Roddy has been busy in the garden getting all of our beds fertilised with manure and lime and clearing weeds and mulching.  We are in good standing to hit the ground running when transplanting season begins! We have been using alpaca manure for the first time, will keep you posted as far as results go, but it comes highly recommended and being in the neighbouring paddock, who could resist? Did you know that alpacas choose spots to go to the loo and return to them, this makes for very easy collection we might add!

We are very excited about our upcoming Spring Workshop Series September 23rd and 24th 2017.  Our dear friend Bridget Scully of Nurture Earth will be joining us and we have a great weekend with three different workshops to choose from, or why not attend all three! We also have camping facilities available upon enquiry, so you can make a weekend of it. For more information or to register go to our website.

If that is not enough to keep us busy we are also attending the Hawke’s Bay Home & Garden Show September  15th, 16th, and 17th 2017.  This is our first year at the show locally, we did attend an event by the same organisers in Taupo last year to great success.

Giveaway! We have 20 tickets to the show to give away.  The first 10 people to place an order and include in the order comments code “H&G Show” will receive 2 free passes to the event.

Getting ready for the new season.  Beds being prepped and muched waiting for heathy transplants.

Things to sow now:

Each season in August we start our first succession sowings of: Tomatoes, Peppers and Eggplant. These crops require a long growing season, and heat to germinate, we use a heat pad to keep the soil temperature stable at around 18-20⁰C. This can also be done near the woodstove or in your hot water cupboard.  Remember to bring your seeds out into the light as soon as they germinate.

We also sow, brassicas like Broccoli Little Marvel, Kale Cavolo Nero, and faster growing Asian greens like Tat Soi, Mizuna as well as Rocket.   Lettuces like Speckled, Mignonette, Odell’s, and Tree to name a few are ready to sow along with some other salad greens like Spinach Bloomsdale, Salad Burnet and Wild Arugala.  It is also a good time to get Silverbeet Fordhook Giant established, as well as some companion flowers like Calendula, Poppies, Sweet Peas, Echinacea, Stock, Cornflower and Hollyhocks.

We often follow the moon calendar in Organic NZ magazine for inspiration on sowing times.

Our Website is the best place to find the most up to date information on what we have available at all times during the year.

We encourage orders through this medium but of course we will still except orders via email from our Catalogue or via the post using our printed order form.

If you know of someone who would like our seeds and is not online, send us their postal address and we can get a printed catalogue to them.

And here is our   Order Form PDF  or Order Form Excell

Email orders from the catalogue to: sethasseeds@outlook.com
