Banded Piping Plovers Tell Their Stories

Piping Plover is an endangered breeding species in the Great Lakes region. Many of the birds that visit our beaches are banded, making identification of individuals relatively easy when reported to the Great Lakes Piping Plover Research and Recovery Team. This fall the origin of four individuals were traced back to different sites in western Michigan including one featured in a Chicago Tribune Article.

IOS Shorebirding Weekend with Kevin Karlson

ILYB Symposium August 26th

In conjunction with Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods and the Lake County Forest Preserves, Illinois Young Birders (ILYB) is holding its second annual Young Birder Symposium on Saturday, August 26th. If you have a young birder in your life, treat them to a day of birding, presentations and art by young birders, and key note speaker, Jen Brumfield.

Rare Bird Alerts
Since our last update, Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks were reported at the Zuma Creek Flats area of Rock Island and along Army Depot Rd. in Carroll County. A Wood Stork was photographed in flight at Sexton Creek Wetlands in Alexander. A Neotropic Cormorant was observed at Lake Shelbyville in Moultrie. Finally, a Ruff was seen at Sanganois State Fish and Wildlife Area in Mason County.
