Our Awards Gala Presentation Dinner was a sold-out success and a fabulous celebration!
Held on Friday, 11 August 2017 at the Grand Ballroom, Doltone House Hyde Park, Sydney which was packed to capacity, we were joined by the Honourable Chief Justice Susan Kiefel AC of the High Court of Australia as our guest speaker. The Chief Justice shared some amusing renditions of her early years at the Bar and similar stories of her colleagues, during a personal address to the audience.
The NSW Women Lawyers Achievement Awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of outstanding women lawyers, mentors and firms that have achieved excellence in their area of practice and helped create opportunities for women in the law.
We are grateful for the support of the Law Society of NSW, the NSW Bar Association, the Department of Justice, the Association of Corporate Counsel, Australia and the Workplace Gender Equality Agency for the Awards this year. Frank H. Wu, author, law professor, former law school dean, and head of a prestigious non-profit Chinese American membership organization the Committee of 100, has written widely about reform of legal education and disruption within the profession.
He will talk about opportunities for global law firms in an increasingly international and transnational practice environment, with an ascendant Asia embracing rule of law.
He will consider changes in the structure of the leading law firms, as competition compels the development of new models for delivery of professional services.
He will consider how best to include people of diverse backgrounds to achieve better client services and realize ideals of a democratic society. |
He is the author of Yellow: Race in America Beyond Black and White and co-author of Race, Rights and Reparation: Law and the Japanese American Internment. His work has appeared in the New York Times and the Washington Post. He blogs regularly for the Huffington Post.

 Pauline is the President of the Law Society of NSW, having served on the Council of the Law Society almost continuously since 1997. She chairs the Environmental Planning & Development and Public Law committees of the Law Society and is a past chair of its Audit committee, Nominations and Criminal Law committees among others. She continues to sit on the Indigenous Legal Issues and Criminal Law committees.
Pauline is a member of the Executive of the Board of Law Council of Australia, and sits on the LCA’s Access to Justice, National Criminal Law Liaison and Equality of Opportunity in the Law committees. She is also a past Director of the Law and Justice Foundation and the Legal Aid Commission of NSW, chairs Legal Aid’s Monitoring Committee and has sat on a number of panel selection committees for Legal Aid as well as its Human Rights committee.
Until taking up her role as President of the Law Society of NSW, Pauline had been President of the Central Coast Chapter of the Urban Development Institute of Australia (NSW Division) for the past several years.
She is also the Senior Vice President of the NSW Council for Civil Liberties, having been actively involved with the Council since 1988.

What makes a successful regional law firm? Thirty lawyers from private practice in regional/rural law firms revealed their successes and failures in conversations with Caroline. No two experiences were the same. However, there were similarities in approaches and characteristics shared by lawyers who ‘lived to tell the tale’ of regional practice. This research is now the subject of Caroline’s draft book: The seven elements of successful country legal practice (to be published by Federation Press in 2017).

 Support children to speak up about their experiences of family law services.
The Australian Institute of Family Studies is conducting a new study to find out how family law services can best help children when their parents separate.
They would like to talk to young people aged 10-17 years old about their experiences and are providing $30 thank-you vouchers for participants.
