Class News

Sea Horse

Good afternoon all parents. I take it everyone had a restful weekend.
IQ THEME: Proudly South African
EQ THEME: Persistence
Taking it back to last week, we had a great week while learning about South Africa, different races and cultures in this beautiful country. The South African flag was a good way to explore colour, how many colours and even different shapes.
We concentrated on number 4 and the children are now well aware of identifying the number 4 .
Thank you to all parents who dressed their child with the South African theme, much appreciated.
This week ahead our theme remains Proudly South African. We still have so many activities to explore regarding South Africa. I especially can’t wait to introduce the Big 5....as our Seahorse Boys love Animals.
Our focus number moves on to number 5 this week. Remember to help your child identify the different numbers at home as it allows them more room for improvement. Collecting 5 forks at dinner time, 2 place mats at lunch time, or even 1 spoon for their porridge. Simple gestures like these helps your child familiarise themselves with number concepts , amounts like more or less.
We are still working on our art pieces for the Art Auction to take place on 1st September 2017.
Please make sure you are available on this evening, open up some time to come see how beautiful your child’s art work is.
Have a fantastic week.
Aneeka & Monica

Sharks

EQ: Waiting and persisting.
General: Proudly SA and People from other countries.
Lang Letter: G g goat, golden, grey
Maths: Calendar, SA Money
Grade R: Revise the rectangle and Left and Right
Last week the children enjoyed making the tablecloth for the art auction that will take place on the night of Friday 1 September. Please book a baby sitter for the evening. I chose a Christmas theme and I could see when we initially started putting on the flour dough mixture that some children did not really understand what we were making. Must have thought crazy teacher drawing with dough!! Once they started painting in the lines they realised what we were making and on Friday when we painted in the background they were amazed at what they had created. It was a good exercise in working together as a team and learning to be patient and wait your turn as it required adult guidance.  We were also very impressed with how the group coped with the change to our class as we had to leave the tables set up for the week and they all had to find new places to sit in a smaller space.  Merle and I are very proud of them.
Last week we discussed South Africa and what makes our country special. We looked at the globe and a flat map of the world. We linked travelling to different modes of transport and discussed how we would get to various countries from SA.  We discussed our national flower, bird, animal, the big five and how they are represented on our money.  They were quick to learn the various notes and it is important for children to understand the value of money. When you go shopping show them the notes you are using and the change you get. A good mathematical exercise as well as an excellent life skill to learn.
Mathematics- This week we will be recapping 2 and 3 d shapes as well as position in space and left and right. Many children struggle with L/R so please re-inforce it at home. In brain gym in the mornings we do exercises that help develop mid-line crossing and an awareness of L/R.
Language: We have had students in our class and they have been telling stories but I have been re-enforcing rhyming words during snack times and when singing songs.
Skills to develop and extend at home: Identifying numbers and letters in the environment. Please continue to help your children learn to tie their shoelace. Practise and persistence will eventually get them there.
I will not be at school on Friday 25 August as I will be attending a NAPTOSA Conference with the rest of the teaching staff. Aunty Merle will be teaching the class and Kerri Laubscher whose daughter Eleanor is in the Angelfish Class will be helping her.

DATES to REMEMBER

Starfish

EQ:  Persistence when trying to attain your goal
IQ:  Reptiles
Focus:  Gross Motor skills:  Balance, skipping, Ball skills
Number concepts:  Shapes and making patterns using shapes
We continue to discuss "Reptiles" and "Persistence when trying to attain your goal" this week.  The children are thoroughly enjoying learning about Reptiles and loved meeting Princess Poppy and Moana the baby tortoises on Friday morning.  Continue to encourage them to bring factual or story books about our theme.  I am glad to hear them telling me they are practising to tie their shoelaces daily.  Encourage them daily to practise both their class goal and their individual goals.  Encourage them to persist and not to give up. Maybe begin a Goal Star chart to encourage them to practise daily.  There are still some children that DO NOT have a goal in the goal box.  Please remember to post one in ASAP.
Our Focus this week is still Gross Motor skills.  Encourage to children to climb, jump, crawl, run, do wheelbarrows, ride scooters or bicycles, balancing games, hopscotch, ball games involving catching, throwing, bouncing and kicking.  Gross motor skills help to strengthen fine motor skills, needed for a good pencil grip and control when drawing and writing.
We are doing a lot of shape and pattern work for our Number Concepts.  Encourage them to copy shape patterns or make up one's for you to copy.  They can thread shaped beads or use the shaped beads to make patterns.
Please diarise our Art Auction which is on Friday 1 September.  The children are so excited and have been working very hard on our different projects.  So far we have made a Heart Mosaic, Mosaic mirror, beautiful table cloth and an individual art.
On Friday 25 August I will be away at the Naptosa conference along with all the other teachers.  Mama Patience will be in charge of the Starfish class for the day.
Cake sale is this Friday 18 August.  Please remember R5.  Penguin and Rainbows are supplying the cakes.

Theme: How to keep my body clean.
Skill:  Intellectual skills - The value of 1-5 EQ: I know I can be able to do more things when I am older.
Hello everyone,
Hope you had a great weekend.
Thank you all for providing treats for our picnic. The children had a wonderful experience sharing with friends.
This week our theme is 'how to keep myself clean'. We will be learning about important parts of our bodies and how to keep them clean. Our Emotional literacy will be aiming at knowing what they can do and what they think they will be able to do as they grow. Give your child opportunities to make decisions, set challenges and try to give reasons for doing or not doing something.
Have a blessed week,
Stella and Faith
