A jury sided with Pepperdine in the sexual discrimination lawsuit brought by two former WBB student-athletes, who claimed the coach wanted them gone because of their lesbian relationship. The case was one of the first instances of a sexual orientation discrimination case under Title IX going to trial. Despite the ruling, Freedom for All Americans staffer Dallara says "this important precedent paves the way for additional students to bring similar cases forward in the future." (link)
With the sizable new Adidas deal now on the books, Nebraska AD Eichorst outlines some of his plans for the Huskers moving forward: A practice facility on campus for Men's & Women's Golf, building a new natatorium, curved video boards & "right sizing" Memorial Stadium, says his department will increase funds transferred back to the university to $10M, up from $5M. Eichorst on getting Three Stripes North America Prez King to Lincoln last fall, "I talked at length about my vision, our vision, our mission, our plan, our people. [...] He was a believer, I was a believer. We said, let’s come together and do something very, very special. And this is." (link); Nebraska's Board of Regents approved a $14M build of a new gymnastics practice facility that's expected to come online in 2020. (link)
Keep an eye out this week for the release of a rebranding initiative at Illinois, which plans to integrate athletics' "Block I" across campus, and adopt the current shades of blue and orange on uniforms as the official school colors. The latter irks some fans, who think the orange doesn't look orange enough, while others, such as Quarterback Club board member Allred, are more accepting: "If I had to pick, I'd go with the old orange. But you've just got to go with the change." The new colors were put into use three years ago when school administrators worked with Nike to refresh and unify uniform logos. (link)
UNLV AD Reed-Francois was part of the Women's Leadership Conference at the MGM last week, recounted wanting to be a big-time sports agent before a shift to leading student-athletes. Reed-Francois pointed to the challenges faced by her quadriplegic brother when she's in need of some encouragement. Key: "Know your ‘why’ — what you’re passionate about." From the same event, Coca Cola AVP for Customer Marketing Twells: "There’s no such thing as balance. Our lives are this constant collision of everything we care about. We exist in this continuum between hot mess and badass. And you figure it out. Miraculously." (link)
A look at Pittsburgh FB's growing use of graphic design on social media for recruiting, which included bringing in James Madison video coordinator Lantz as director of creative media after being wowed by work he did for the FCS champs. Lantz specializes in photo edits and works closely with recruiting coordinator Harley, who praises the new staffer: "He’s got a great vision. He’s a great executor of what you want. ...He’s fast and works fast, which is the pace of recruiting." Lantz notes it's a two-way street: 'The hardest part, especially from a recruiting standpoint, is coming up with what’s gonna be different from what other schools do and how you can kind of relate Pitt to them on a personal level. It’s something I’ve been thinking about. Since I don’t do the actual recruiting part with talking to the players, I don’t know what will connect with them." But Harley does, as HC Narduzzi emphasizes the importance of connecting with PSAs in a unique way, lets his younger staffers do their thing before he provides the final thumbs up. Narduzzi, on Harley: "He’s a younger guy, and I think we’re in a younger game. Why come into my office and ask me a young man’s question?" (link)
Northern Iowa AD Harris & Rhode Island AD Bjorn sat for an AthleticDirectorU panel moderated by DHR's Sugiyama on how the pair approached HC contracts, extensions & negotiations. Bjorn notes how he enhanced the deal for MBB HC Hurley after just one season & only a handful of wins because of what he saw as the director & core of the program. Harris compares with a much different situation as MBB leader Jacobson has already been in Cedar Falls for a lengthy & successful stint, commonly appears on lists of HCs who could be hired away. Harris: "It's really important to have a coach that wants to be at your institution & enjoys your community." Lots more. (link)

Notre Dame and Wisconsin are expected to announce today at a news conference at the Under Armour store in Chicago that the two schools will match-up on the gridiron at Lambeau Field in 2020 and Soldier Field in 2021. The programs have not met since 1964, but Badgers AD Alvarez has ties to the Fighting Irish as a former AC from 1987-89. (link); The Fieldhouse's Hamilton: "Interesting twist on the #NotreDame-#Wisconsin two-game series: Look for the Irish to be the home team at Lambeau Field." (link)

Oklahoma opens the public doors to show off its new Barry Switzer Center as another FB program now has upgraded, sparkling digs. Sooners AD Castiglione says a number of former OU student-athletes have remarked how badly they wish the new facility would have been in place during their time in Norman. A scroll through the pictures shows a waterfall in the cold plunge tub, an expansive fueling station, all sorts of sharp new graphic treatments, lots of fresh meeting rooms, the necessary barber's chair & more. (link)
The Washington FB squad got its first look at the new $1M locker room inside Husky Stadium. The new digs, created by design firm Gallagher, features 1.1 miles of LED lighting, three 20-foot tall graphic light boxes that include flat panel televisions, more than 500 feet of graphic prints, and several other highlights. Student-athlete Gaines: "It’s like a spaceship in there. It’s definitely the coolest locker room I’ve ever been in. Coach Pete said he’s always been about having a championship locker room, so he wanted to put his money where his mouth was and build us a championship locker room." (link)
Continuing the renovation theme, USC Sports Information Director Tessalone provides some perspective to the university's student newspaper as the next revamp phase for the L.A. Coliseum approaches. Of note given reports of the facility naming rights deal with United Airlines, "As part of its agreement to operate the L.A. Coliseum and to support the renovations, the restorations and the operation of the Coliseum, USC has been pursuing a naming rights arrangement with various entities. At this time, no naming rights deal has been finalized." Also, "...it’s going to give our football team a first-class facility, it’s going to provide revenue that will not only fund football but all 21 of our sports." (link)
Despite significant football facility improvements in Lexington, SEC Country's Mussatto says Kentucky still lags "well behind the top half of the SEC when it comes to cash" as the Cats rank ahead of only Missouri and Mississippi State in revenue. In FY16, UK netted $18.6M in football after a $39.7M revenue haul, compare that to the top half of the league's teams each bringing in $79.9M+ in revenue that year. AD Barnhart: "The SEC is the most competitive league in America in all facets and I don't want to lose sight of the fact that we compare favorably on a national level in terms of revenue. ... We firmly believe that revenue will grow with our program, but in the meantime we have been aggressively investing in its development, such as the renovation of the stadium, construction of the new football training center and in the personnel and services that support our students." More. (link)
Never one to embrace social media, Washington State FB HC Leach got the Twitter bug this summer, treating his nearly 59K followers to posts ranging from YouTube clips of his old Texas Tech teams to pictures of The Beatles. However, a large chunk of his posts involve the issue of sovereign immunity and Leach's contention that the Red Raiders still owe him $2.5M. Leach: "The No. 1 reason I got on Twitter is to promote WSU football. And the No. 2 reason is the sovereign immunity law needs to be changed. ... I’m thinking I’ve got quite a few people follow my Twitter, so I can bring some awareness of this. I’ll be on it for awhile and I get a kick out of the (interaction), but I’m not moving on. These guys cheated me." (link)

WDRB's Crawford breaks down Louisville's appeal to the NCAA Infractions Appeal Committee, made public on Friday: 1. The car and escorts comparison, citing that U of L's take on this matter was that historically the NCAA has treated a player's interaction with an escort the same as his getting a car ride worth $150; 2. What about precedent - asks if the COI had reason to up the violations based on their sexual nature and further why U of L didn't object; 3. What about the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons? Louisville doesn't expressly argue for the reinstatement of those combined 58 victories; 4. Louisville's strongest argument - that the COI didn't consider the Cards already self-imposed penalties; 5. What about the banner - Louisville questions the NCAA's stance on making a player immune then later ruling him ineligible; 6. Final odds and ends - the school has disassociated with former student-athletes who did not cooperate with the NCAA on the investigation. MBB HC Pitino's own appeal has not been made public, yet. (link)
The Arkansas Democrat Gazette's Allen takes a hard stand against an Orlando Sentinel column republished last week in his paper which contained anonymous FBS HC statements that blasted the SEC for cheating and recruiting violations. "Hmm. Sure the SEC abounds with dirty laundry. Historically, every SEC school but Vanderbilt at some point has been called on the NCAA carpet regarding football, men's basketball, or both ... But to assert that nearly all programs north, east and west of the SEC are so pure seems a stretch." Points to more recent issues at Ohio State and Penn State, calling the latter the "most perverse scandal in NCAA history!" and closes with: "Everybody does it is not a defense for the SEC, but it seems like a good time for coaches to admit that conduct is not necessarily all fine above the Mason-Dixon line." (link)
Florida has suspended seven FB student-athletes for its season-opening game against Michigan for making improper charges on their university student IDs at the school bookstore and then selling those items for cash. The student-athletes involved are expected to either return the items or repay the bookstore. FB HC McElwain: "We have a small group of players that have made some choices that are extremely disappointing. Action has been taken -- they have missed some practice and will miss the Michigan game. We will use this as a learning opportunity and we will have some players step up as we move forward." (link); San Diego State FB HC Long is concerned about a chickenpox outbreak that has already affected three of his student-athletes: "I’m afraid that it might not be just three of them. The team’s been together for a whole week now. It’s dramatic if we lose a few more. ... What if it hits 10 other ones?" (link)
In light of the situation in Charlottesville, Inside Higher Ed's Jaschik writes on the challenges universities face as white supremacist groups attempt to gain access to campuses. Controversial group, the National Policy Institute, and its leader Richard Spencer, are the center of attention for some as Spencer is scheduled to deliver a talk at Texas A&M in early December. Spencer is also trying to get to the University of Florida a month from now. TAMU regent Buzbee notes how the university cannot deny use of public facilities for Spencer, says the best tactic is to ignore his craving for media attention. (linklink)
Also Noticed: Georgetown Soccer will host 'Millenial Day,' where the Hoyas will hand out participation trophies & ask that fans "ONLY use their cell phones," a move ESPN's Rovell calls "awesome." (link); West Virginia's new 37x97 foot videoboard at Milan Puskar Stadium is nearly complete, now in the testing phase. (link); Rutgers FB HC Ash tweets a picture of rapper Migos performing for his team. (link); CFB analyst Herbstreit gets his first win in the horse business, as his Soul Streit won at Del Mar over the weekend. (link)
