'Sit Less, Move More, Sleep Well' Wellington Workshops
Over November, our Community Sport Advisor, Amanda Taylor, and our Healthy Lifestyles Child and Whanau Team Leader, Katie Siueva, joined forces with the Heart Foundation and Compass Health to deliver three workshops across the Wellington Region about healthy habits, nutrition, physical activity and sleeping for under fives to over 70 fantastic early childhood educators.
Katie spoke about the importance of being present, engaging children in quality experiences and explored the benefits and ideas of how you can integrate using your senses into the experiences children have and outlined how screen time omits this key area of learning.

A fantastic example shared was mindful eating, click here to try this out yourself and with your family and colleagues.

Find out more about Katie's work here:

Amanda discussed how movement and the development of fundamental movement skills lay the foundations for getting ready for school and playing sports later down the track.

They then discussed linking this messaging into the educators’ learning stories so these messages are shared with our families and whanau.

Have a go at this ‘match-up’ activity with your team at your centre or school.

Getting a chance to 'have-a-go' locally
After 14 years, the annual Sport Wellington Stadium Sports Festival, aimed at providing primary aged children with quality ‘have-a-go’ experiences in sports, is evolving from the fixed Wellington location of the Westpac Stadium to a locally led approach of a number of events held in the regions by local organisations.

“We believe that we can increase the reach of the festival ‘have-a-go’ experience by encouraging and assisting the development of locally-led events, and therefore reach a greater number of students,” Patrick Simpson, Community Sport Manager, Sport Wellington said.

Physical Education for Year 7/8
In her final contribution for 2017, Accredited Educational Facilitator - Libby Paterson asks how we are preparing our students to be 21st century learners?

Libby also touches on how we can give back to our communities at this time of year, and highlights the broader redesign of Professional Learning and Development (PLD) called Networks of Expertise.

Christmas energiser activity
We're all counting down the days to Christmas break and your students will be too!

Don’t forget to take it easy on them as they are under a lot of stress due to being monitored constantly by the Elf on the Shelf, who has a direct line to Santa.

To get into the festive spirit, try out this Christmas themed activity - Elf Express!

The people that make Wellington primary school sport happen!
When you and your children attend a zone/inter-zone sports tournament or festival, have you ever stopped and wondered who has made this possible? Working tirelessly behind the scenes are an amazingly dedicated group of people.

Most schools have a sports co-ordinator who spends many extra hours volunteering their time to attend meetings, organise, coach and manage teams so children have the opportunity to try new activities and to play with and against other schools.

The Wellington region has nine school sport clusters (zones) made up of individual associations that encourage schools to play sport with each other – Interschool Sport. Of these nine zones, seven have part time paid zone convenors, while the other two have dedicated staff that ensure messages get through and events happen.

The nine zones are Kapiti/Otaki, Masterton, South Wairarapa, Upper Valley, Lower Hutt Primary School Sport Association (LHPSSA), Primary Sport Wellington (PSW), Porirua Primary School Sport Association (PPSSA), Parumoana and the Intermediate group.

Each of these nine zones has a Sports Convenor / Director of Sport who oversees the co-ordination and facilitation of successful events in their regions in partnership with their cluster schools.

As we head into the frenzy that is athletics with the zone, interzone and finally regional events, spare a thought for Shelley, Anna, Sharon, David, Leigh, Garry, Nicola, Theresa and Angela who are working beyond their paid commitments and volunteering their time to organise quality events for your young people.

Better still, if you see them at an event, go over, make yourself known and THANK them!
The importance of risky play for physical, social and emotional development
The weather is improving and with it the opportunity for more outdoor play. An exciting component of playing outdoors is allowing an element of risk.

“Risky play is a form of play that is thrilling and involves an element of potential physical injury. It most often occurs outdoors, during free play, where children challenge themselves by overcoming fear and trying something new, or by tiptoeing the line between being in or out of control. Risky play is not being reckless or careless.
Engaging in risky play is a natural part of a child’s development. In addition to increasing physical activity and developing social skills, risky play is a way by which children learn to adapt to their environments and fears, and may moderate the potential of a future anxiety disorder.”
