Lionfish University and our collaborator, Coast Watch Alliance (also a 501c3 non-profit) shared a booth at DEMA in Orlando. We have been collaborating with Coast Watch Alliance for almost two years to help fund the lionfish trap research of Dr. Steve Gittings, lead researcher of the NOAA marine parks.
We had quite a bit of traffic at the booth and a lot of interest in the topic of invasive lionfish. We prepared and served 75 pounds of lionfish ceviche, sold more than $600 of lionfish jewelry on behalf of the Belize group which empowers women to provide income for their families, and had models of the traps developed by Dr. Gittings and a display describing his research. Our raffle made over $700 that will be contributed to Dr. Gittings’ fourth phase of research on the traps.
Thank you to the 11 volunteers who helped staff the booth this year. We’re looking forward to DEMA 2018!
The fight against the lionfish invasion is ongoing.
