Love your work. Love your life.

Dear Friends,

In many ways, there has never been a better time to be a woman. As traumatic as some of the recent news has been, there is also a collective strength that so many of us are feeling, as though we are all in a giant trust fall together. My friend calls it “a new sisterhood” as our secrets have now turned into shared stories. When we compare the world of today to the world in which Anita Hill came out with her story, we can only scream “progress!” Let’s revel in it.

Dream big, plan big!

THE SOAP BOX

This is the most important piece you can read this year. Truly. We can talk all we want about the wage gap and raising strong girls and feminist boys and fighting for equality, but if you don't have it at home, most of the other stuff is irrelevant.

SAM'S CENTS

Shining Through Your Attitude

We now know that people heal faster, attract romantic partners easier, and live longer if they maintain a positive attitude. If you don’t think positive, start doing it—fast. A positive attitude will take you far in the corporate world, making it easier to thrive and to bounce back from inevitable setbacks.

To project a positive attitude at the office, pay attention to these three things:

React emotionally. Yes, there are times to get emotional at work. Is there anything worse than a person who reacts to great news with barely a flicker of light? While you shouldn’t be a puddle of emotions, it is okay and often helpful to show your happiness at appropriate times. When your team reaches its sales goal or a colleague shares an accomplishment, be the first one to celebrate with genuine well-wishes.

Don’t huff an puff. Never utter the words “that is not my job” or muddle resentfully through a task that you deem beneath you. Be the team player who proactively asks what the greatest challenge is and how you can help solve it.

Stay out of the fray. It can be tempting to engage in office gossip, but resist the urge. So much good comes from being the one who smiles at the office and is kind to everyone. Once you become known for staying out of back talk, you will thankfully lose your invitation to the gossip circle. Good thing: this is one party you should be happy to skip.
