Rink Volunteer Opportunities

Rink Committee

The goal this year is to create a Rink Committee with a focus on both the yearly setup/teardown and flooding of the rink as well as planning and organizing the future of the rink.  To do this the rink committee needs to create a new structure that allows the sharing and distribution of tasks to be completed by multiple people/groups/teams.
The proposed structure of the Rink Committee is:
  • Administration
  • Communication
  • Events & Programs
  • Future & Maintenance
  • Flooding and Maintenance (ideally 6 teams - 3 members per team)
For a detailed breakdown and examples of the rolls for this structure (or to volunteer to join the committee, including joining the flooding team) please CLICK HERE!

Rink Flooding

For the proposed flooding schedule (including clearing the ice prior to Ice Tots on Saturday mornings) and to sign up to join the flooding team please CLICK HERE!

Ice Tots is coming back!

The Winston Heights Mountview Community Association is bringing back Ice Tots this season!

Ice Tots is a learn to skate program for 3-6 year olds taught in a group format. Each child must be accompanied on the ice by an adult. (The adult should wear skates or non-slip footwear on the ice.)

Sarah Wiedmer Jarabak, a very qualified skating instructor will again teach our program, which will consist of 8 weekly 40 minute classes starting January 6, 2018 at the community rink. The format has changed a little this year so please read the following carefully:

First class at 9:00 – 9:40 for children aged 3 – 5yr with no previous skating experience.

Second class 9:50 – 10:30 for children aged 3 – 5yr who have been on skates before or attended previous Ice Tots classes.

Third class 10:40 – 11:20 for children 4 – 6yr who can skate but want to improve.

Because the Community Association will again underwrite the costs of the program, we can offer it free of charge to all Winston Heights-Mountview Community Association Members (both resident and associate memberships that are current/renewed for the 2017/2018 year). Similar indoor programs cost around $70.00/child. If you are not a member but would like to join Ice Tots please follow this link to get a membership: membership

Preregistration is required and children must have skates and a CSA helmet. If you and your child wish to participate, please register here: Ice Tots Sign-Up

Traffic Committee Update

There will be traffic calming added to the intersection of 20th Ave and 5th Street NE, due to issues in the past at this intersection.  The decision on what will be done will likely happen before the end of this year.  The implementation will take place sometime in 2018. Some of the local residents have been contacted to get their input.  If you have any ideas, comments, concerns, or would like to be involved in the traffic committee please contact the traffic co-ordinator at traffic@winstonheights.ca.
Board Secretary and Director at Large Needed!

The WHMCA Board of Directors has a couple of openings on its Executive and Board of Directors and would love for you to share your talents with us! We are currently looking to fill the Board Secretary and a Director at Large position.

If you have ever thought about getting more involved within the Community, want to meet other community members but don’t know how, are looking to broaden your skills and experience or just add some volunteer work to your resume, this is an excellent way to do it and to benefit your neighbourhood at the same time!

If you are uncertain about a Board position we also have several Committee opportunities available including the secretary of our Facility and Operations Committee.

Please contact Christine for more information: president@winstonheights.ca for more information.
Planning and Development

NEW DP’S

  • DP2017-3939, 1720 4 Street NE – NEW: Liqour Store, Financial Institution, Dwelling Unit, Supermarket, Office, Gas bar, Car Wash - single vehicle, Retail and Consumer Service (6 buildings, 115 units)
The committee supports this development and has requested a community open house to receive feedback and comments from the community at large.
We have asked that they take parking on 17th Avenue into consideration and consider the possibility of converting a portion of that street into permit parking only
  • DP2017-3131, 502 17 Avenue NE - Multi Residential Development (2 buildings, 20 units)
  1. There was an Open house at the Community Hall for this project in August, we have yet to receive feedback and comments made to the developer from the community at large
Though the committee supports this  project as a whole, there are elements we continue to address with the developer and City that we do not support: East Facade and transition into the rest of the single-family R-C2 neighbourhood, we do not support any relaxation on parking and continue to encourage them to bury at least half of it

1912 Edmonton Trail - applicant is applying for land use change from MC1 to MU1, which  will allow them to operate a Real Estate office from the current site and for future development of a mixed-use building (this lot is part of the City’s “Main Street” zoning)

Curious about what else is going on in the neighbourhood?  Follow the link to see the City of Calgary's Planning and Development map to get the most current details.
