Spark Plug Heat Ranges

Are you using the correct spark plugs?

Spark plugs are made to operate in certain heat ranges ie certain combustion chamber temperatures. There is a trade off between giving good cold start performance and not causing detonation. A spark plug that gives good cold start performance also has more potential to cause knock.

Car manufacturers probably spend millions designing just the combustion chamber so if your car is close to standard the original spark plugs will probably be the best choice.

However if you have modified your engine your combustion chamber could be operating at higher temperatures which means your spark plug is hotter which could mean it is causing pre ignition.

As a general rule NGK recommend using a spark plug that is 1 grade colder when the horsepower of the engine is increased by around 75bhp.

The first number in the NGK spark plug code is the heat range of the spark plug.

If your factory NGK spark plug has the code BKR6EIX the heat range is 6.

If you engine uses a 6 heat range spark plug from the factory and makes 200bhp and you have increased the power of the engine to 275bhp, you should probably use a 1 grade colder spark plug ie a 7 heat range spark plug eg BKR7EIX

From the video you can see the conductor is more exposed in the hotter spark plug (BKR6EIX). The spark plug conductor will run hotter because it is more exposed to the combustion chamber.

The colder spark plug (BPR9EIX) has less conductor exposed to the combustion chamber so it will run colder.
