Rockingham County Commissioner Mark Richardson Appointed to Governor’s Education Commission

Mark Richardson, Chairman of the Rockingham County Board of Commissioners was appointed to the Governor’s Commission on Access to Sound, Basic Education. The Commission was created by Governor Roy Cooper through Executive Order to focus on the state’s public education duties as enshrined in the North Carolina constitution, which declares, “[t]he people have a right to the privilege of education, and it is the duty of the State to guard and maintain that right.”

Wilson County iGov Program Graduates Inaugural Class

This month, the Wilson County Board of Commissioners recognized the inaugural class of iGov graduates. The iGov program provides training to Wilson County employees over the course of 12 months to promote inter-departmental collaboration, professional growth and enhanced customer service. The program is designed to provide a deeper understanding of all the county services across the full spectrum of county government. Wilson County Manager Denise Stinagle and Assistant County Manager Ron Hunt facilitate the learning experiences for iGov participants each month.

NCACC Intern and Ph.D. Candidate Victoria Dounoucos to Host Webinar on Stepping Up Findings

Victoria Dounoucos, 2017 NCACC Summer Intern, Ph.D. Candidate, Duke University will host a webinar to share the findings of her study on the Stepping Up Initiative, which seeks to reduce mental illness and addiction in jails. The report, which was conducted over the summer, tracks the progress North Carolina counties are making in implementing the Stepping Up Initiative. The report findings were also featured in a recent article published in the fall issue of CountyQuarterly.

Census Training Workshops Offered to Local Government

The US Census Bureau Atlanta Regional Office staff is working with the NC Councils of Government to provide training workshops throughout the state for local governments on the Local Update of Census Addresses (LUCA) program. The LUCA program offers local governments the opportunity to review the US Census Bureau list of addresses for their area and verify the list. Having an accurate address list is an important part of preparing for the 2020 Census, because it helps ensure that Census questionnaires are sent to every household in the community. Registration Open for Emerging Horizon Conference on Medicaid Transformation and Other Issues

The NC Council of Community Programs invites county commissioners to attend the Emerging Horizon Conference, which will be held December 6-8, 2017 at Pinehurst Resort, Pinehurst, NC. The conference will discuss a range of issues affecting counties including Medicaid transformation, child welfare, disaster preparedness for individuals needing complex care, and local efforts to address the opioid crisis. State Seeking Feedback on Internet Connectivity for State Broadband Map

The NC Department of Information Technology’s (DIT) Broadband Infrastructure Office is seeking information from internet users to identify all the areas throughout the state where broadband internet access is needed. To that end, a mapping tool was established to allow individuals to report their internet speed. The purpose of the mapping tool is to help DIT to accurately track coverage for homes and businesses around the state. This will help DIT develop strategic plans for improving connectivity. Click here to access the broadband mapping tool.

Registration Open for 2018 Emerging Issues Forum to Discuss Investing in Early Childhood Education

Registration is now open for the 2018 Emerging Issues Forum “kidonomics: Investing Early in Our Future.” The forum, which will be held February 5-6, 2018, at the Raleigh Convention Center and Hunt Library at NC State Centennial Campus, will help communities make key investments in early learning. It will feature leading national and local experts in business, early childhood, economic development, education, finance and government, nonprofit and workforce development. It will also provide information and tools on how to design, implement, and fund, childhood initiatives that can make a difference in local communities. THRIVE: NCACC Regional Meeting on Child Welfare (December 6 - Asheville, NC)
This convening will provide a level set understanding of the state’s current system of child welfare and county responsibilities, actionable county-level data and select best practices, and an awareness of the 2017 Family/Child Protection and Accountability Act (Rylan’s Law). Meeting attendees will have the opportunity to provide comments for the Social Services Regional Supervision and Collaboration Working Group, which is the group established pursuant to Session Law 2017-41 (H630) to make recommendations to NC DHHS. Speakers will include representatives of NC DHHS, UNC School of Government, and the NCACC, with panel discussions led by elected representatives of the judiciary and Boards of Commissioners, social services attorneys and child welfare staff.
