Arrivals and Departures: WGXC Broadcast Schedule Updates

November is a month of transition and activity here at WGXC. Programmers Tom DePietro, Kamal Johnson, Victor Mendolia, and Cheryl K. Symister-Masterson all recently returned from hiatus; Joanna Tipple will return to the airwaves in December. We are thrilled to have everyone back and are grateful to those who stepped in as co-hosts and substitutes in their absence.

Meanwhile, we are saying thank you and farewell (for now) to a handful of programmers. Chris Bishop has announced his hiatus from Vinyl Rundown for six months. Prog and Fusion is now on indefinite hiatus as host Ken Landin focuses his attention elsewhere for a bit. Tyson Hauf has concluded the run of his most recent effort, An Odd Little Place. And for the time being, we bid adieu to Daniel Steffey's program The Cutty Strange

Read on for introductions to all the new voices and programs to debut on WGXC this month.

Every month on the 3rd Wednesday from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m.

Experimental composer, producer, and performer Tom Smith (To Live and Shave in L.A., OHNE, Pussy Galore) draws from his extensive archive to map invigorating, lesser-known aesthetic contours. Each month there is a spotlight on an artist asked to make a 30-minute mix of their own music. It'll air during the third hour.

The Watt From Pedro Show

Produced by Mike Watt.
4th Wednesdays of the month from 2 a.m. to 5 a.m.

Radio show from Mike Watt (solo artist, Minutemen, fIREHOSE, Iggy Pop and The Stooges) playing some tunes and doing some spiel. Assisted by brother matt and coming to you from the wild kingdom at the pleasure point, in San Pedro, California.

Dustbin

Hosted by Justin Calder
The 5th Wednesday of the month from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

A medley of dusty debris from every genre in the 20th century. From theme music to folkloric tales to hot joints that never made it past the dance floor, these far-out relics are paired with obscure artists and amateurs that build off of the contributions of those old dusty strangers. Listeners are invited to send in their music and collaborate on and off the air.

City Folk

Hosted by Fredrick Arnold
Fridays from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m

You’re invited to put on your boots and join us every Friday morning as we meander through the wild areas of our modern urban landscape, exploring contemporary and classic Americana, folk, country and elusive material that defies genre. New or artifact, urban or rural — City Folk is a curated field guide for the humble, a study in dirt and bone. Catskill resident Fredrick Arnold has worked in the world of modern folk since 2012 and continues to be heavily involved both on and off the air.

Radiaphiles

Produced by Mobile Radio
Fridays from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m

In Radiaphiles, Mobile Radio offers an overview of independent and not-for-profit community, 'free', campus, and pirate stations who provide a wealth of material and perspectives outside of the mainstream media orthodoxy. This series constitutes a major retrospective of the work of the radio art network Radia, whose collective mission is to make radio that transcends the borders and boundaries of land and language. Mobile Radio visits each station in turn to discern their motives and inspirations, and explore the work of one of their associated artists.

Radiaphiles was produced as part of a commission for Documenta 14, and was originally aired in Kassel and Berlin from June 17 - July 7, 2017. For more information visit mobile-radio.net.

The Future of What

Saturdays from 4 a.m. to 5 a.m.

A weekly program about the music industry. From Kill Rock Stars record label.

Would you like to do a show on WGXC? We welcome program applications throughout the year. There are many ways to be on the air—submit a proposal for a weekly or monthly program, be a guest music DJ, host a morning or afternoon show, or submit your own radio features and segments for broadcast consideration. No previous radio experience is necessary, and all ages are encouraged to apply. Learn more here.

Upcoming WGXC 90.7-FM Events

Phil Kline's Unsilent Night

Saturday, Dec. 23, 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.

Gather at the Public Square at 7th and Warren in Hudson

In partnership with Wave Farm, Phil Kline's Unsilent Night returns to Hudson for its second year. Led by Phil Kline himself, participants gather at Hudson's Public Square at Warren and Seventh Street and march to Hudson's Promenade for the parade's culmination. This year's parade route celebrates Hudson's lesser traveled alleys and enclaves, winding through corridors and byways that shade the city's historic streetscape.

All are invited to participate. To do so: arrive at the Public Square no later than 6:45 p.m. with a boombox or smartphone with external speakers. (If you plan to use your smartphone, we recommend that you visit unsilentnight.com/participate before the event to download a track or the Unsilent Night app.) A limited supply of boomboxes will be available to borrow on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants will begin marching just after 7 p.m. The event will be broadcast live on WGXC 90.7-FM, and at wgxc.org. For more information about this event, go to the Unsilent Night Hudson 2017 Facebook page.

Unsilent Night is an original composition by Phil Kline, written specifically to be heard outdoors in the month of December, always as a free event. It takes the form of a street promenade in which the audience becomes the performer. Each participant gets one of four tracks of music. Originally the music was played using only cassette tapes in boomboxes, but as vintage boomboxes have become harder to find, more people use smartphones with portable speakers to blast the music. Together all four tracks comprise Unsilent Night. Visit unsilentnight.com for more information.
