Alcohol Research UK’s Research Innovation Grants Scheme is open

Our Research Innovation Grants programme is now open and we are continuing with our priority ‘Treatment and Recovery Today’.

Awards of up to £75,000 over two years are available. This is an increase on previous years to reflect the potential costs of building public involvement into the design and delivery of the project.

Our report ‘Public Involvement in Alcohol Research’ will be available on our website by the end of November and applicants are encouraged to read this before submitting their application.

The deadline for receipt of applications is Tuesday, 16th January 2018

For further information and details on how to apply, please see our website.

Alcohol Research UK and Alcohol Concern publish annual reports for 2016/17

Announcing the publication of the reports, Professor Alan Maryon-Davis, Chair of the newly merged organisation, said:

“The recent merger of Alcohol Research UK and Alcohol Concern is a great opportunity for real progress in the field of alcohol harm reduction. As today’s two reports testify, the new combined organisation inherits a wealth of achievement from both its predecessors – the impressive track record of research funding and evidence gathering by Alcohol Research UK, and the high-profile advocacy work of Alcohol Concern.

“The trustees will do all we can to help build on these legacies so that the combined charity proves to be an even greater force for ensuring that policy and practice are based on the best available evidence.”

Supreme Court rules that Minimum Unit Pricing of alcohol in Scotland is legal

On 15 November, the Supreme Court in Scotland delivered its final judgement that Minimum Unit Pricing (MUP) for alcohol is legal, a step which Alcohol Research UK/Alcohol Concern says will improve the health and wellbeing of thousands of people.

This follows on from the Welsh Government's announcement last month that it too will be implementing minimum alcohol pricing in Wales.

Welcoming the decision, Dr Richard Piper, CEO of Alcohol Research UK and Alcohol Concern, said:

“The introduction of a minimum unit price is an important and effective step in addressing the harms caused by alcohol misuse in Scotland. Scotland and Wales will now be pursuing minimum pricing, leading the way for England to implement this important and targeted public health measure. Now is the time for Westminster to step up and save lives."

Dry January 2018 launch: Our official charity partners

Today saw the initial launch of Dry January 2018.

Last year over five million people reset their relationship with alcohol through Dry January, giving up alcohol for one month.

This year, we are partnering with six national charities working on issues related to alcohol harm to raise awareness and funds to help reduce alcohol-related harm in the UK.
