School president named Lasallian Educator of Year

La Salle Prep President Denise L. Jones was feted this week as the Lasallian Educator of the Year, an honor awarded by the school's faculty and staff. During her 15 years at the helm, the school has grown to 700 students, improved its facilities, and become more fiscally sound. Jones plans to retire at the end of this school year; read more about her legacy in the student publication, The La Salle Falconer.

Mission Minute: A vow for the ages

This week our community held our annual Heroic Vow celebration. We honored our Lasallian Educator of the Year, La Salle Prep President Mrs. Denise L. Jones, and invited the Class of 2018 to take their own heroic vow.

The celebration, one of our school’s most honored traditions, is named after what's known as the Heroic Vow our founder John Baptist de La Salle took in 1691.

At the time, De La Salle was facing a difficult decision: Continue the work he had been doing for 10 years – or quit.  His family had disavowed him, his superiors had sued him, half the brothers had left, his money had been misappropriated, and the teaching college he started had closed.

He could have returned to his hometown, where a nice cathedral job was waiting for him. Instead, De La Salle and two energetic brothers vowed to continue their work, even if they had “to beg for alms and live on bread alone” to do it. De La Salle's commitment transformed young people then; it continues to transform the more than 1 million students who attend Lasallian schools all over the world today.

During our Heroic Vow ceremony we invited the seniors to pledge to serve as big brothers and sisters to younger students, to forever “remember the presence of God, value the individual, accept everyone and respect all persons," to "push their limits to respond to the poor and overcome injustice, and to “prepare for life by utilizing the quality education they have received and seek the truth in all things."

I’m proud to say our seniors responded positively and resolutely.

Our world is in great need of our students’ hope, optimism, passion, and dedication to the core principles of a Lasallian education. As our students made their vows this week, I firmly believe De La Salle was smiling and sending our community blessings of gratitude and grace.

'Almost, Maine' almost done; see it this weekend

La Salle's theater department will stage its final performances of the romantic comedy, "Almost, Maine" at 7 tonight and tomorrow and at 2 pm Sunday here on campus. Come support our students while treating yourself to a show that's gotten rave reviews! Buy tickets at the door.

Campaign brings in more than 100 coats for needy

The La Salle community brought in 111 coats during the coat drive led by Lucas Van Wagner '19.

Donations ranged from hot pink kids jackets to black men's parkas. Many of the coats still had tags on them.

"This was such a big turnout," said Lucas, who was inspired to gather coats after seeing many suffer last winter. "You can tell people care."

Lucas plans to give the coats to the Clackamas Service Center and others who work with people in need. He hopes to hold another coat drive next fall.

Out shopping? Get a few items for Christmas drive

Every Christmas La Salle "adopts" 35 families from nearby Lot Whitcomb Elementary School, where more than 85 percent of the students qualify for free or reduced lunches. Each Falcon Formation class helps one family by bringing in and wrapping gifts for the children.

In addition to the gifts, we provide each family with a box of household items. We are seeking donations of the following items:
  • Oral Hygiene: Toothpaste, Toothbrushes, Floss
  • Body Hygiene: Body Soap, Hand Soap, Shampoo, Conditioner
  • Household Cleaning Supplies: Dish Soap, Laundry Detergent, Sanitizing Wipes, Paper Towels
Students can bring these items to their Falcon Formation class or give them to Kelsey Peyton in the Student Life Center. Thank you for helping spread Christmas cheer this season!

Pick up your wreaths on Monday and Tuesday

Please remember to pick up your wreaths orders on Monday, Nov. 20,  and Tuesday, Nov. 21. Pick up will be in the La Salle Center between 8 am and 6 pm both days. UPS orders will ship the week after Thanksgiving and take 4-7 business days for delivery.

If you would like to help distribute wreaths, we have shifts available from 7:30-9am Monday and Tuesday and 2:30-5 pm Monday and Tuesday. Contact Melanie McCaffrey at mmccaffrey@lsprep.org to sign up.

Lend a hand before, during, or after Yulefest

If you didn't get a ticket to Yulefest, which is now sold out, take heart: You can still be part of this La Salle tradition. There's lots to do, from making the signature meatballs (see above) to pouring wine the night of the event. Some of the volunteer roles include:

  • Registration: Check in guests. Approximately 5:15 pm - 7:30 pm
  • Bartender: Sell sodas and water at the non-alcoholic bar. There are usually two shifts: approximately 5:30 -8 pm  or 8 pm - 11 pm
  • Wine Pourer: Pour wine and process sales at winery stations. Approximately 5 pm - 8:30 pm.
  • Will Call Runner: When wine is purchased at winery tables, runners collect the bottles and bring them to the Will Call area where guests pick it up for dinner or to take home. Approximately 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm
  • Will Call Attendant: Organize bottles by name and distribute to guests picking up. Two shifts, approximately 6 pm - 8:30 or 8:30 pm - 11 pm

Sign up to volunteer here!

Donate a bottle or two for the Yulefest Wine Tree

The Alumni Association seeks donations of bottles of wine valued at $21 or more for the Yulefest Wine Tree. How does the Wine Tree work? Guests are invited to pay $20 to “pull” a wrapped bottle of wine with a guaranteed value-increase of at least $1, and often much more. Proceeds from the Wine Tree support the Alumni Board’s scholarship and student enrichment programs. To donate wine, contact Carol McClory at cmcclory@lsprep.org or 971-506-4102.

Once a Lasallian, always a Lasallian

Matthew Werner '18 signed his Letter of Intent to golf for La Salle University. Congratulations, Matt!

Bake Sale will raise money for justice

The Youth Ending Slavery club will hold a bake sale Monday, Nov. 20, and Tuesday, Nov. 21, before school in the main hallway and during both lunches in the cafeteria. All proceeds will be donated to Door to Grace, a Christian nonprofit that supports victims of sex trafficking in Portland. The club wants to support Door to Grace because its values align with La Salle's core values, said Amira Tripp Folsom '20. "We hope to raise as much as possible," she said.

Make an appointment to give blood on Nov. 30

La Salle will host a blood drive on Thursday, Nov. 30, with its partner, Bloodworks NW, a Pacific Northwest nonprofit that supplies about 90 hospitals and clinics in Washington, Oregon, and Alaska.

The drive is open to the entire La Salle community including students, staff, parents, and alumni. Donation appointments will be 7:30am- 1:30pm.  If you would like to donate, please refer to this
chart to see if you qualify. If you do, email Kelsey Peyton or call her at 503-353-1414.

Connecting the dots in class

Students in Peter Snow’s  AP World History class show the correlation between current event topics and significant historical events by presenting recent news stories and connecting them to the AP curriculum.

Students then worked in groups to dissect an article that discusses the continuity and change of historical eras. Lastly, students recited a song used in helping remember the various Chinese dynasties.

Your Generosity, Our Responsibility

The season of giving is quickly coming upon us.  Between now and Christmas, it is possible that many of you will be making end-of-year donations to your favorite charities.

We recognize that many “asks” from La Salle and others over a short time frame is a challenge even to the most generous of souls.  Each family has its own best time and best way to give. Knowing people want to align their giving to La Salle in different ways, we provide many opportunities throughout the year, yet Christmastime proves to be a time for giving for many, and we are grateful recipients of your generosity.

Our goal and our responsibility is to make giving to La Salle a joyful experience.  To that end, we provide you with an overview of upcoming events, drives, and appeals that soon will take place at La Salle to help you achieve your personal giving objectives.

Are You a Match?

Attention Nike employees - Nike will double match your contribution to La Salle if you designate money for sports or fitness.  You can turn a $100 gift into a $300 gift instantly, for example.  All other gifts will be matched by Nike 1:1.

Many companies match charitable donations.  We invite alumni, parents, and friends to seek these additional funds, stretching the financial impact of a donation.

The process is easy.  Your company’s HR Director will supply you with the form you need to double – and in some cases triple – your donation.

Nike, PCC, Nordstrom, Intel, Wells Fargo, The Standard, and Hanna Andersson are just a few of the companies that will bolster your investment in La Salle.

If you have questions, call Carol McClory, Director of Alumni Engagement and Development, at 971.506.4102 or email her at cmcclory@lsprep.org.

Photos of the Week

Below: In honor of the Heroic Vow that St. John Baptist de La Salle took to maintain Christian Brothers schools more than 300 years ago, our seniors vowed on Wednesday to serve as older brothers and sisters to fellow students and to recognize the presence of God in all they do. After making the vow, each senior stepped up to receive a Lasallian medal from a faculty member.
