Here along this way but I,

This autumn evening" - Basho

This haiku came to mind as I strolled the empty, windswept avenue towards Smalls, Sunday at midnight. The wind stung my eyes and tears rolled down my cheeks. I could not see but a blur, whirl of traffic and sound. West 10th street and 7th - take a right, there's that weird statue. I pull open the weatherbeaten door and descend downward. A blast of warm air and the sound of raucous laughter - excitement and.. jazz music! A room of people, packed tightly together, exuberant, thriving and surviving on a riff, living music. Humanity.
