An Advent/Christmas Rant

Ok. Not really a rant, because that's not my thing. But really: what's with all the twee, candles are so pretty, fa-la-la Advent and Christmas music? I mean, sure if you work in a secular school where your winter concert has thematic restrictions—go for it! But if you're in a church, why waste a single breath on the prettiness of candles when you could be singing about the Incarnation!

God becoming truly human > pretty candles

End of story.

That being said, I have a soft spot for Christmas lullabies and their gentle perspective on the Incarnation, and I've been enjoying these new-to-me choral lullabies that a colleague introduced me to: Archer's "This Endris Night" and Mathias's "Sweet Was the Song."

If you'd like to read more Advent/Christmas thoughts, this is an essay I wrote last January about my experience meditating on the Incarnate One in the midst of the "wars and rumors of wars" around us.

I hope you have a wonderful holiday season, filled with light, love, and of course, good hymns!

What I'm Reading

(besides board books)

  • this take on gender in Eastern Orthodox hymn texts (makes me think about debates about using vernacular/up-to-date language in church texts in general)
  • all kinds of crazy happening with editions of J. S. Bach's chorale prelude, Allein Gott in de höh sei Ehr, BWV 715
  • this piece on children's choirs makes me think about the perineal question—should church musicians themselves be Christians? the article makes the case that choral singing can and does draw children and their families to Christ.
  • on Beethoven composing music through physical touch

New music for a minimalist recital

It arrived in the midst of laundry folding—totally glam life over here ;)

Btw, shout out to Cliff Hill Music—they made ordering this kind of odd assortment easy.
