RESEARCH/ Fact-finding trip to Wakapoa in Region 2

A team from the Informal Working Group for Language Policy and Rights in Guyana travelled to Wakapoa in Region 2 from 20-22 October 2017 to talk to speakers and 'near speakers' of Lokono in the community about revitalizing their language. This is a preliminary trip ahead of a planned visit by University of the West Indies linguist Daidrah Smith in January. We'll be posting further updates in due course. ACTION/ Following our Introduction to Writing in Guyanese Creole course, a group of participants have set up a Creolese language activism group, Fos Klaas (or First Class). Coordinator Janice Imhoff explains what it's all about on our website.

RESEARCH/ We're delighted to welcome Dr Lena Caesar (pictured right, with Claudette Austin, Dean of the Faculty of Education & Humanities at UG), a researcher from Loyola University, Maryland who is in Guyana to carry out research for her child-language acquisition project 'Analyzing Narrative Language Production in Guyanese Populations'.

Watch this fascinating video 'Silencing of the Tongues: Arawak/Lokono' produced by the Jamaica Language Unit in 2009 and featuring Guyanese linguist Dr Hubert Devonish of the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus.
EDUCATION/ Two postgraduate students from the University of Guyana are due to do an internship on St. Eustatius (known locally as Statia) as part of a project facilitating the transition from Dutch to English as the language of instruction on the island, which is located between Anguilla and Montserrat. We look forward to updates from the students on the progress of the project and what they learn along the way.
