Jennifer Higdon’s lively “Skyline,” with strong rhythmic propulsion, vigor and witty orchestral effects, sets the program in motion. Beethoven’s “Triple Concerto,” a warm and beautiful showpiece, called by some a vast rhapsody, shows off the virtuosity of three equally talented soloists. Hear the alluring interplay between the orchestra and solo instruments — violin, cello, piano — by the Detroit Symphony’s Associate Concertmaster Kim Kennedy and Principal Cello Wei Yu with the brilliant Korean pianist Keun-A Lee.

     The second half of the program is brimming with Hungarian melodies, spicy orchestral color, infectious rhythms, and a hint of Gypsy. One of the foremost cimbalom players, Alex Udvary joins the orchestra in Zoltan Kodaly’s Háry János Suite! The cimbalom, a very large dulcimer-like instrument, is a traditional Hungarian folk instrument. Hector Berlioz’ lively Hungarian March, triumphant and lyrical, is an energetic ending to a night of beautiful music!
