Anybody who is anybody was sure to have a mesmerising experience watching Penryn College’s production of Bugsy Malone. Over one hundred students came together in acting, singing, dancing roles, as well as back stage, tech team and the live band to create a sell-out performance of Bugsy Malone. One student’s experience of Bugsy celebrated that the students involved from years 7-11 ‘came together as a family, for an experience they will never forget.’ The lead roles were a mix of year 8, 9 and 11 students who first auditioned for their roles in May and have spent hours learning lines and knowing their characters. The whole cast committed hours of their time for rehearsals after school, Saturday mornings and a full day in the October half term ready for the opening show on Thursday 2nd November that had an audience of over 200 primary students from the local area. The students did two daytime shows as well as two evening shows. One parent watching in the audience shared how her daughter ‘had just had the best time being part of it and I felt so emotional (and still do today) watching her along with her friends, some of whom she has been with right through preschool and primary school, and now here they are in Y11...”

The young people who were involved in this show were not only professional throughout the whole production of Bugsy, but came together to form friendships that would stay with them throughout their time at Penryn College. The cast supported each other learning lines and spent time helping each other to learn choreography and stage directions to ensure the show was the best it could be for their audience. Assistant head Kirstie Oliver describes ‘…The range and ability of the children is unique I feel to our school. And didn’t they shine!’

One parent congratulated the Creative Arts department for ‘…The quality of the young people you produce never fails to amaze and stun and we were deeply impressed with all the performers last night.’ Finn and Guy, both in year 11 who had lead roles reveal that ‘the work and time put in by the cast and staff alike was incredible, despite it being a big commitment. The time we spent working on this show was reflected in the standing ovation we received.’

The sense of community and togetherness that was felt between all of the students involved in Bugsy reflects our Penryn College way. Head teacher Paul Walker describes this musical as ‘the best show he had seen in this school.  It was a warm, superb and fantastic experience.  A pure piece of magic’ after the show Mr Walker celebrated with the students backstage on Friday night and greeted them all with a handshake and congratulations.

We are very proud of our young people and want to thank them for their hard work and commitment shown for this show. Without them this production of Bugsy Malone wouldn’t have been possible.

Instrumental invoices have gone out to parents for the spring term and we would be grateful for payment by Friday  1st December.

Successful Yr9 Careers Evening
Tuesday evening saw our Year 9 Students exploring possible career pathways in preparation for choosing their GCSE Options in January.  Over 25 companies including Software Cornwall, Koha Architects, Allen and Heath, Hine Downing, Watson Marlow, Sugar Magic as well as colleagues from Falmouth College, Truro College, Cornwall College, Falmouth Marine School and Duchy College had stalls in the lower street with representatives available to discuss careers and further education.  Students had the opportunity to use high tech computer equipment as well as trying out engineering based experiments.  Mrs Burley, one of the organisers of the evening, said “I am delighted that so many students and their parents were able to attend to see the amazing careers and opportunities that are available to them within the local community.  We are very grateful to all the companies that gave up their valuable time to come along to the event to offer advice to our students”

PARKING ON SCHOOL GROUNDS
It would be appreciated if individuals parking their car in the school grounds during the school day would avoid parking in the bus bay, especially if they think they may still be here when the buses are due to arrive from 2.30pm onwards.
Rotary Club Cookery Competition
Tuesday 14th November saw budding chefs from Penryn College participate in the Rotary Young Chef competition.  The four entrants had a budget of £15 from which they had to purchase ingredients to prepare a three course meal for two people with the dishes were chosen by the students themselves.
Items on the menu included Beetroot Ravioli, Roasted Duck Breast and Lemon Cheesecake.
Organiser, Rotarian Jim Henderson, said “The competition was fantastic. The students displayed such fantastic skills and passion for cooking.  The dishes were of a very high standard and none would have looked out of place in a restaurant.  Choosing the winner proved very hard”
The event was judged by local chef, Pepe and there were only a few points between each entrant.  The runners up were Sebastian and Naomi, Mia took second place with Gabriel winning overall.
Gabriel and Mia now go through to the second round at Cornwall College next month.
All four students were awarded a prize from Penryn Rotary Club.

Y10 Computer Science Visit to RNAS Culdrose

On Wednesday 8th of November a group of Year 10 Computer Science students had the once in a lifetime opportunity to visit RNAS Culdrose to see the IT systems used for training the Merlin Helicopter Pilots.

First they were given an introduction to how the various flight crews were trained in the class room before moving on to see the various simulators. These consisted of desk based consoles used for training the flight Observers, a full size replica of a Merlin used for maintenance simulation and training, some Virtual Reality training systems and the multi-million £ flight simulator.

The un-expected highlight was getting to go inside the flight simulator and a few students actually got hands-on control to flight the Merlin from Penryn College, over Carrick Roads, past St. Anthony’s head and back up Helford Passage – a totally amazing experience that literally money cannot buy!

To finish off, they were given a highly detailed tour of a Merlin that was in the hanger by the different aircrew explaining their roles and how they used the different technology.

(Unfortunately, due to security we were not allowed to take our own photos).

Numeracy Skill of the Week

Rounding is a fundamental skill to help understand accuracy and to allow useful estimates. Students need to be able to round to decimal places and to significant figures, the latter causes some issues and the more often it could be discussed the better.
Decimal places; i.e round 13.543 to 1 decimal place (1d.p) would give 13.5 you are left with 1 number after the decimal point. 2d.p -3d.p etc are then progressively more accurate roundings. Significant figures; the numbers are counted from the left starting with the first non-zero digit. So 0.04572 rounded to 2 significant figures (2s.f) would become 0.046 and 24530 would round to 25000 using 2s.f accuracy. The size of the number is retained with zeros used as place holders (to fill up the gaps).
Rounding to significant figures and decimal places both follow the same rules and method as outlined below.
