Q’eqchi’ Women Fight Back
Seeking Justice for Rape, Murder & Repression in the Mining Industry: The Hudbay Minerals/CGN lawsuits
  • WHERE:  Friends’ House, 60 Lowther, Toronto, M5R-1C7
  • WHEN:  November 23, 2017, 6:00-7:30 pm
  • COST:  By donation

During the month of November 2017, the landmark Hudbay Minerals/CGN lawsuits –initiated in 2010- have been continuing in Toronto, Canada.  Thirteen Mayan Q’eqchi plaintiffs from Guatemala are suing Hudbay (and its formerly owned subsidiary company CGN) for its responsibility for the murder of Adolfo Ich and shooting-paralyzing of German Chub in 2009, and the gang rapes of eleven women from the community of Lote 8 in 2007 (when Skye Resources was the owner of CGN.  In 2008, Hudbay purchased Skye and CGN).

From Nov. 8-24, the women from Lote 8 have been questioned on the record, for up to 8 hours a day, by Hudbay’s lawyers, as part of examinations for discovery.  The women have travelled to Toronto on a weekly basis: 3 the first week, 4 each in the 2nd and 3rd weeks.  German Chub and Angelica Choc –widow of Adolfo Ich- will be similarly questioned in early 2018.

Hudbay’s lawyers are questioning the women in detail about any and everything related to the lawsuits, including the gang rapes they suffered and the wholescale burning and destruction of their home community in 2007 by mining company security guards, soldiers and police.

These are the first lawsuits in Canadian legal history to hold a Canadian company to account in Canadian courts for mining related repression, harms and human rights violations in other countries.

Report Back
Join us for a report back from four women from Lote 8 (just completing their week of examinations for discovery); from lawyers with the Klippensteins law firm representing the 13 plaintiffs; and from Rights Action, working with and supporting the Q’eqchi’ people of El Estor since 2004.

This event will be the one chance these women will have, during their trip to Toronto, to share their stories outside of the parameters of Hudbay lawyers' questioning on the record.  Please come to share your support and solidarity!

There will also be an opportunity to purchase a print of the painting "13 Brave Giants vs Hudbay Minerals", by Pati Flores (see photo, above).  All proceeds will go to support the ongoing costs of this fight for justice.
