Burnaby Tournament Fun!

Congratulations to the Washington Wild teams that represented WWFHA at the 2017 Burnaby Remembrance Day Tournament so well on and off the ice! The 19U Rep A, 14U T1 Red, 10U T1 Red, and an 8U T1 Red team participated.

All four of the teams earned some pretty goals, and all were seen supporting each other in their matching jerseys and making a great deal of noise cheering! It was fun to see so many Wild logos among the 8 rinks and 42 participating teams.

14U Rep AA Team Ties SJHA in Qualifier

On Saturday November 11th the Washington Wild 14U Rep AA team tied the Seattle Junior Lady Admirals 1-1 in the first game of a 2-game series. The back and forth game was loaded with rushes and strong defensive stands.

Both teams advance to the Pacific District Championship Tournament in March and the 2-game series determines tournament pool placement. The next seeding game will occur after December 31st.

Seattle City Council Meeting on Thursday

We encourage all players, coaches, and parents to attend the Seattle City Council Meeting on Thursday at 10:30am regarding the OakView Group (OVG) Memorandum of Understanding at Seattle City Hall Chambers.

Attending the meeting provides a great civics lesson for student-athletes. WWFHA is looking for players interested in making a statement on behalf of the association and in favor of the OVG proposal for an arena at the Seattle Center, or just show up in their red game jersey! This meeting is most likely the last one before the Seattle City Council makes a decision in December.

The OVG proposal is the most direct route to securing an NHL team, which leads to more ice arenas in the local area (a practice facility will be built and typically more ice rinks are built when a pro team is established in a city). If a player would like to attend please
email Zoe Harris, Executive Director, Operations.

Alumnae News

2017 WWFHA and 19U Rep AA team graduate Laura Stump is enjoying the start of school and her new college hockey team as NCAA D3 teams begin practice and games.

Laura Stump attends Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts where she intends to study biochemistry with a minor in criminal psychology or art. Laura donned the Gulls jersey for the first time this week.

Currently ranked 9th nationally in NCAA D3 play, the Gulls were picked to finish second in the Colonial Hockey Conference preseason coaches’ poll, as announced by the conference office on Thursday. The Gulls were just three points behind defending CHC Champion, Morrisville State, which nabbed the top spot with 47 points and five first-place votes. Rounding out the top three was SUNY Canton with 34 points.

Last season, Endicott finished with an overall record of 22-4-1 and 11-1 in the conference. The Gulls reached the CHC Championship game, where they were edged 3-1 by Morrisville State.

Fueling for Performance with Sports Nutritionist Gen Masson

WWFHA pro-staff and sports nutritionist Gen Masson met with the 14U Rep AA team to discuss fueling for performance. The players learned the core food groups and good choices before, during and after competition. She also covered food that help with recovery. The players participated in two hands-on activities to learn concepts, including a Bingo game where they won prizes!

Strength & Recovery PT with Josefin Shakya

WWFHA pro-staff, physical therapist and Swedish Bronze Medalist, Josefin Shakya, spoke to the 19U Rep A and AA teams about keeping the body in tune for better performance.

Josefin specifically addressed postural restoration and how asymmetry and muscle imbalances lead to injury.  She taught the players how to test themselves for alignment and then showed them exercises to improve their alignment to improve performance and avoid injury. In particular, she demonstrated a couple of simple exercises to help with breathing and engaging critical muscle groups.

Budgeting Tips from USA Hockey

All youth sports require some financial investment, and costs to participate in hockey can be substantially reduced with planning and common sense.

Additionally, USA Hockey and many local associations offer a number of options to help make hockey a game everyone can play and enjoy. Above all, don’t buy in to the myth that only kids form wealthy families can excel in hockey. Many of the game’s greatest players came from modest backgrounds.
