B'Shalom -- News from Havurat Shalom
The Havurah is pleased to once again participate in T'ruah's Human Rights Shabbat. December 10 is International Human Rights Day, and on Saturday December 9, services and the d'var Torah will reflect a human rights theme. We hope you can join us!

Chanukah Party

Sunday December 17, 5:00 pm

Bundle up the kids, grab your menorah and join us for a night of light and fun! Together we will enjoy latkes, pizza, dreidls, singing and a casual music jam. You are invited to bring your musical instruments as well as your chanukiah (menorah) or share in lighting one of ours. Suggested donation of $5.00 for the pizza dinner.

Talmud Study Group

The Havurah is pleased to welcome a new-to-us teacher, Glenn Ferdman. After Shabbat lunch on Decemeber 2nd, Glenn will lead an informal, lay-led Talmudic study group geared for beginner to intermediate level. Those without any prior exposure to the Talmud, or folks who are genuinely curious are also welcome.

Emphasis will be on elucidating the meaning of the text in its historic as well as modern contexts, including contemporary application, and as a starting point for discussion based on questions raised by the text (e.g., ethics, morality, religious duty, free will, civic duty, individual responsibility, etc.).

Glenn Ferdman has studied the Talmud for 20 years, in Israel and the US, first as a student, and then as a teacher. His methodology seeks to explore the meaning of the text as it was understood throughout the generations and as it applies to us in contemporary times.

Destiny Disrupted:
A History of the World through Islamic eyes

As part of the Havurah's ongoing commitment to social justice, we're going to learn more about Islam by reading Tamim Ansary's Destiny Disrupted: A History of the World through Islamic Eyes. Please join us in reading this book and then coming together to discuss it each Saturday in January. The Havurah has one copy of the book to lend out if needed.

Havurat Shalom is pleased to host Story Space Tuesday evenings. Story Space is a friendly, cooperative venue where seasoned tellers and newcomers alike are received with full attention. Come and try out a new story or spin an old favorite. Storytellers of all ages, levels, & experience - first-time Tellers are encouraged. In addition to Open Telling (8-minute slots, sign-up by 7:00), there will be a Feature.

$5 requested Donation

No Topics. No Competition. No Judging. Just Stories.

Time Trade Circle

Havurat Shalom is an organizational member of the local time bank, Time Trade Circle. If you want to learn about or join TTC, come to the orientation on December 3.

The first Saturday of the month, we have children's book club, where the kids can choose from books for various ages to be read.

There are older and younger children's playrooms on the second floor, and a play structure in the back yard.

Contact us regarding childcare on Shabbat.

The Havurah is seeking new members! Members commit to doing some of the varied work that makes the Havurah run. If you might be interested in membership, please contact Heidi at info@thehav.org or 617-623-3376.

We Mourn Our Recent Losses

We are saddened to learn of the death of Havurah alumna Trina Birnbaum.

Howard Cohen, father of Havurah alumna Batya Betsy Kallus, died last month.

May the Source of Peace send peace to all who mourn and comfort to all who are bereaved.

Shabbat services at the Havurah are egalitarian, lay-led and usually involve a lot of singing. We have Shabbat services Saturday mornings at 10:00 and some Fridays. See December events for details.

There are two potlucks this month: Lunch on Saturday December 3 and dinner on December 8. They are truly pot luck - no arranging of the dishes in advance. Feel free to bring anything dairy or parve to these vegetarian meals.
