Hep Free NYC Program Feature: Meet CBWCHC

Janice Lyu, Hep B Program Associate at the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center (CBWCHC), tells us about CBWCHC's Check Hep B Patient Navigation Program.
Describe a typical day for CBWCHC's Check Hep B Patient Navigation Program.
A typical day for care managers/patient navigators of the Check Hep B Patient Navigation Program entails learning about patients' and family members’ HBV history, providing counseling/education in person and appointment/medication adherence reminders over the phone. And most importantly, answering any questions that patients might have about their hep B and providing available resources for those who need assistance with their care.

What's your favorite Hep Free NYC moment?
We enjoy the NYC Hep B Coalition meetings since members provide insights from their organizations, including any care supports and updates that are available, and the

opportunity to collaborate to enhance hep B awareness in communities. We, particularly, appreciated and were thrilled to have Dr. Perry Pong, CBWCHC Chief Medical Officer, represent the Chinese American and other vulnerable populations at the May Hepatitis Awareness Press Conference in City Hall.

What do you think we need to achieve a Hep Free NYC?
We believe it is important to offer more complete awareness, education, and resources that support susceptible populations: AAPI, those foreign born living in NYC and, especially, women of childbearing age, pregnant, or entering postpartum, and their partners/close contacts to prevent vertical transmission since it is one of the leading cause of hep B transmission.
