Dubuque Course Classic

The $30,000 Dubuque Classic Stakes opens today at the Iowa Greyhound Park over the 2,040 foot Dubuque Course. The 28 greyhounds will battle over three rounds to set up the Friday, September 2, final.

There will be four races in the first round but the first race, the fourth on the program, is the most interesting. In the opening field, out of the one box, is HILCO KING (Superior Kennel), who enters with a 13-6-1-0 record. In the two box, O YA CURLY SUE (Wayne R Ward), had a 14-6-2-4 record. In the six box, THUG ROSE (Stidham Racing), is 14-5-2-1.

The other greyhound to note, SUPERIOR YESY (Superior) with a record of 14-6-3-1, will come out of the seven box in the 10th race, the third of the opening round races.

Four greyhounds come into the Stakes with four wins on the 2016 season. ROC A BY JACKEL (Jackson Greyhounds), 17-4-0-4, has the two box in the sixth race; TAHAS TALES (Jackson), 16-4-4-3, has the two box in the 10th race; AJ’S CALLIE (Jackson), 17-4-4-3, has the one box in the 12th race and DNT FINBARCLANCY (T And T), 12-4-6-1, has the two box in the 12th race.

The greyhounds will return to the track for the second round on Friday, August 19.

Dave Wood Memorial

The final race of the Dave Wood Memorial at Daytona Beach Kennel Club took place on Saturday, July 30th.

Betting favorite, #1, FM PATCEE, broke the box like a cannon ball and dueled with #8, P'S PAK, for the early lead into the escape turn. She opened up by three down the backstretch and had just enough left to out game P'S PAK for a narrow victory. #7, HASHTAG HILARY, overcame early traffic trouble and drove hard from sixth to get up in time to show.

Moving from last to finish fourth, #5, WW'S CHADWICK, completed the super. #4, WW'S DURANGOGOLD, faded from third in the deep stretch, running out of gas to cross the wire in fifth place. #2, WW MAKE IT FLY, never sprouted wings, got shuffled back early, and could only manage sixth. Seventh place finisher #6, WICKED BUBBLAH, never stood a chance after early traffic trouble and will have to wait for another day. The caboose, #3, ROCKON RACOON, tired badly approaching the final turn in fifth position.

Congratulations to FM PATCEE and all connections on her victory!

bestbet Sprint Classic

After a couple of years absence from bestbet Jacksonville, the DQ Williams Kennel has returned and has come back with a vengeance. If you have followed our circuit in the past, you know that there have been a slew of not only stakes winners and track record holders, but All-America members, too, coming from the DQ Williams Barn. On Saturday evening, August 6th, yet another name has been etched into the silver plate.

Saturday was the finals of the 2016 $20,000 bestbet Sprint Classic with a talented field of greyhounds competing for the cash in crown. Every greyhound in the field had to win a race to get in and five of the eight in the finals won at least 2 races in qualifying. Leading the way was a DQ entry, but probably not the one that everyone was looking for.

After the big dogs withdrew, HEY HEY DADDY took the lead spot for the kennel and never looked back. Winning 3 of the 4 rounds, she was now the one to beat. With the added pressure of all those names in the past riding on her back in this final round race, would she be up to the challenge? Could she keep it going strong? Could she raise the trophy once again for the king of the stakes at bestbet Jacksonville? We were all ready to find out.

Ebro's Mega Morris

Ebro Greyhound Park was the site of the finals of the Mega Morris Stakes on July 30, 2016, for pups that have won the first race of their racing careers at Ebro.

#6, HULA HOOP, a 61 pound female out of SH AVATAR and CALL ME PECULIAR, used her superior early speed rush from her outside post to spring a mild upset and take home the prize. Running for the Ray Thurber Kennel, HULA HOOP is owned by Robert or John C Hardison, and is trained by Brenda Thurber Levesque. HULA HOOP, cleared on top by 1 1/2 lengths and increased her advantage throughout to win by a comfortable 2 1/2 lengths at the finish, with final odds of 9/2.

The two favorites in the race #1, KILLER PILGRIM, (5/2) and #4, SILKY SHEP (5/2), broke first and second, but could not withstand the early rush of the winner. PILGRIM and SHEP battled throughout the race and, oddly enough, finished in a dead heat for second. The fourth placed finisher, #2, FF ADAM (9-1), broke slowly and had a little trouble early, but recovered to finish 4 1/2 lengths behind the winner. The rest of the field finishes in order: KAYLA ALBRIGHT, WINTER JASMINE,  JIMMY CORTEZ and DISTANCEYOURSELF.

Congratulations to HULA HOOP and all of her connections for becoming the Mega Morris Champion.
