Welcome to the monthly e-bulletin from Think Global, the UK education charity working to create a more just and sustainable world through the power of global learning.

The Change Makers

Think Global conference, 13 October 2016

How do we create a new generation willing to learn and act to make the world more just and sustainable?

Join us at our free one-day conference focussing on initiatives and groups who are creating positive change in their communities and beyond.

Faaria Ahmad, who is organising this event, says: "Despite massive challenges facing the world, there are many ripples of positive change happening across the globe led by inspiring Change Makers. How can we highlight what they do, learn from them, support and inspire them and create more of them, so they become an unstoppable generation?"

Book now to reserve your free place and meet fantastic Change Makers at this inspiring event:

  • Thursday 13 October 2016, 09:30 to 16:00
  • St Alban's Centre, Leigh Place, Baldwin’s Gardens, London, EC1N 7AB
Participants will also be able to attend Think Global's AGM, which will be held at the end of this event, and find out a bit more about our work.

European funding success!

We're pleased to report that a recent joint bid from Think Global for Erasmus+ funding has been successful. Led by our Croatian partner organisation Forum for Freedom in Education, and involving other partners in Italy and Slovenia, the two-year project is called Start the Change - Embracing differences through intercultural education and volunteering.

Think Global's Head of Programmes Sarah Williams said: "We've all been working really hard submitting bids over the past few months so it's great to get such positive feedback. We're looking forward to starting off this project in December."

The project will work with young people and teachers to develop themes of active citizenship, peace-building and conflict resolution, with the aim of preventing radicalization and violence.

How can local empowerment transform communities?

Free one-day workshops in London and Portsmouth

Tending chilli plants at OrganicleaThink Global is running two workshops to bring together NGOs and social economy initiatives – including Locality, Social Enterprise UK and Islamic Relief – to find new ways of empowering communities, creating sustainable livelihoods and sharing best practice.

Think Global Programme Manager, Faaria Ahmad explains: "The Europe-wide, EC funded project called SUSY (SUstainability and SolidaritY), in which we are a partner, seeks to map and raise awareness about an alternative economic model, namely the social and solidarity economy (SSE), which can work positively towards poverty alleviation. Through these workshops a range of different organisations in this field will be able to learn from each other to make a bigger impact."

The London workshop is already fully booked, but there's still space on the Portsmouth one, held on Friday 23 September – book online via Eventbrite.

Goodbye to Tom

After five years in post, we’re saying goodbye to our Chief Executive, Tom Franklin, this month. He’ll be moving to the Citizenship Foundation as their new CEO. Tom said,

Tom Franklin“It’s been wonderful to be part of Think Global these past few years. With increased global insecurity and uncertainty, the work of Think Global in helping people make sense of global issues, and encouraging them to play their part in making the world more just and sustainable, continues to be highly relevant. Whether it is projects to help understanding of global supply chain issues or to support the social economy; or our training and resources for teachers – Think Global helps people think critically about global challenges, and promotes active global citizenship. I wish the organisation – the staff team, trustees, and all our members and volunteers – the best for the future in its crucial work.”

The organisation is currently recruiting a replacement CEO – watch future editions of this newsletter for further news.
