Academy Students In the Spotlight

Sri Lankan Lawyer- Academy StudentD. Lokupothagama, Lawyer, Sri Lanka. I am a Sri Lankan Lawyer with 19 years of practice and two years of foreign experience as a Legal Researcher in New Zealand. I must mention in particular that I am from a developing country with a lack of knowledge in International Law. Being a student at The Hague Academy is therefore a highly prized opportunity to get to know the veteran views on contemporary issues in international law as very eminent professors give lectures and seminars. Also, this is a very valuable chance for a young professional to interact with one’s counterpart from all over the globe, share experience and views, and exchange knowledge about recent trends and new methodologies followed in research and justification of practice.

Symeon C. SymeonidesThe Cypriot Branch of the International Law Association and Le Club De Droit International cordially invite you to the lecture: "Private International Law: What’s in a Name?" by Professor Symeon C. Symeonides, Dean Emeritus and Alex L. Parks Distinguished Chair in Law at Willamette University. The name "Private International Law" (PIL), coined by an American writer (Joseph Story) has prevailed in much of the rest of the world, though not in the United States. The name "Conflict of Laws," first used by a Dutch writer (Ulrich Huber), has prevailed in the United States but not in Europe. Neither name is entirely accurate, but each of them reflects different assumptions about the nature, scope, and function of this subject. The lecture will examine these assumptions. It will explore, in particular, the extent to which PIL is indeed "Private" or "International" Law.
