If one listens carefully to the news media, the word- "Disconnect"- is the new word on the block.
The problem of police shooting of black men in the States is analysed as being a "disconnect" between the community and the police.
The housing crisis in Auckland is because there is a "disconnect" between public policy and market forces.
Climate change problems are because there is a "disconnect" between Nature and human use on this planet.
Donald Trump's popularity is because he is tapping into a general "disconnect" between politicians and the community they are supposed to serve.
And there are many other examples.
Being disconnected on many levels runs contrary to our Christian Belief that in creation "Everything is connected. Everything and everyone belongs" (Richard Rohr O.F.M)
A school has to make special efforts to ensure that everyone in the school is connected to its daily way of life. Boys thrive when they connect in their classroom studies, when they connect on the sports field and when their parents ,staff and families are engaged in their son's school.
So what are we trying to do at St Paul's College in this area of connection?
1. We want to connect/engage families to be part of their school. The recent weekly reports from every teacher on every classroom subject, is about connecting families to their son's learning.
2.The uniform changes are about boys connecting with the pride and tradition of St Paul's College
3. The requirements to be present each day,on time with the right equipment for each subject, is about asking boys to connect to their academic studies on a daily basis.

4. The excellent after match hosting by the First XV families is about connecting boys and families to being hospitable towards one's sporting opponents.
5. The whole school dinner in March, the Mothers dinner on 1st September and father- son Mass in September is about connecting families with each other and with their son's school.
I have this fundamental belief that in Education we have to continually strive to have boys, their teachers and their families connected and all working hard for their son's school
At St Paul's College we need to have more social events, more fundraising events, more initiatives by families to lift and celebrate this very special community of learning.
I hope you agree.
Being "disconnected" in this beautiful world is simply lonely and wrong.

It promises to be a very good social occasion so that all Mothers at St Paul's can meet other mothers in a social setting

Thank you for the effort that is made to ensure that your sons are properly turned out each day in the correct uniform.
The blazers and ties gives your sons presence and respectability . The PE dress is the final change in the uniform structure. This will come into effect from term four 2016
In the meantime all boys are required to have sports shoes (not daily shoe footwear) on their feet when doing Physical education classes. This is a requirement under health and Safety rules.

CURRICULUM UPDATE
Term 3 is a busy term for all students at St Paul’s College. Junior students will be completing mid year Asttle testing and seniors students are working towards completing all internal assessment so that that can concentrate on external exams in term 4. Year 13 students should also be working towards gaining their University Entrance before week 9 of term 3. This will create one less barrier for these students before they complete their external exams.
All NZQA fees are due on the 26 of August. This can be paid to the school office. Senior students have all received a financial assistance application form. Students need to return this form along with a community services card or benefit number in order to be eligible for the the NZQA fee subsidy.

PASTORAL CARE
WEEKLY ENGAGEMENT REPORT
All parents are emailed a weekly report. Generally this should come to you on a Friday. It will show a 1-5 rating for most classes, any Lates for the Week, any instances of where your son has been withdrawn from class and your son’s attendance year to date. The Deans email is on this report if you have any specific queries.
ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY
Being on time and at school is the single biggest indicator of success and engagement. We have made some changes to ensure that regular lateness or absence is addressed quickly and good habits formed for school and work.
ATTENDANCE
The Target for this term for every student at 90% attendance. Any students who fall under this target will need to make up time in the first 3 days of the holiday. This means no more than 4.5 days absent whatever the reason so please encourage being here every day.
If your son is away you must contact the College. If we do not hear from you we email and text to advise. This costs the College both time and money so ask for your support in being proactive.
LATENESS
- If your son is late for an unjustified reason, you will be emailed that day. We will record this and report it in the Weekly Engagement Report
- A second instance will result in your son being required to work in the Withdrawal room for the day.
- A further instance will result in withdrawal to the Deans Office and a meeting being held before return to normal classes
- A further instance will result in a referral to the Deputy Head where a possible outcome is a recommendation of a stand down to the Headmaster.
WITHDRAWAL
We have been focused on further instilling the notion that disturbing others learning or not learning yourself in a class is never acceptable. Behaviors which we see as being unacceptable are
- Being Late to Class
- Not Having the correct equipment – Correct book – one book for each class, Pens, Calculator, PE gear including sneakers
- Misbehaviour - not following Teachers’ instructions, remaining on task, not disturbing others
Each week Late to Class and Not having Equipment are reset to 0, however Misbehavior is tracked with staged consequences similar to lateness above if change has not occurred.

SPECIAL CHARACTER UPDATE
CATHOLIC CARING MASS AND AWARDS
Our students Raymond Pua, Ezekiel Sio, and Reuben Fruean were awarded a Caring Award by Bishop Patrick Dunn at the Catholic Caring Foundation’s Caring Mass and Caring Awards at St Patrick’s Cathedral on Wednesday July 27th, for their outstanding care and commitment to caring for others in our community.
The Foundation, through donations and bequests, has been supporting communities in need with grants for emergency housing, domestic violence prevention, elderly support, growth programmes for youth, foodbanks, refugee, migrant and new settler support services and families in crisis for over 25 years. FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION OF OUR LADY
The Feast of the Assumption of our Lady will be celebrated at St Paul's College with Mass on Wednesday 17 August at 10am in the School chapel.
Six students will be receiving the Sacraments of Initiation. Fr. Alan Roberts will be celebrating the Mass.

MUSIC UPDATE
Term 3 began with a lot of preparation for Stand Up Stand Out (pictured) competitions at the Otara Music Arts Centre with ran from the 1st to the 8th of August. Year 9, Selevasio Tu’ima blew the judges away, coming 4th out of 67 soloists, most of whom were senior students. He will be performing in the semi finals as well as the finals at the Vodafone Events Centre on the 26th August.
Selevasio also represented St. Paul’s College along with Marilyn from St. Mary’s College, where they performed a duet and later that day performed at St. Mary’s musical proms night. There were 6 year 13 students who also represented us well in the group vocal section of Stand Up Stand Out. We all celebrate with these fine young men (and Marilyn) for their courage and great performances.

The year 7 & 8 class represented us, with year 9 guest soloist Selevasio Tu’ima at the Police Blue Light awards afternoon at the Pullman hotel. This fine group of young men sang with passion, courage and all who were present, including government representatives were encouraged by their musical presentation.

SPORTS UPDATE
As usual, It's been a busy and successful winter for St Paul's sport. According to the stats, we've achieved a significant improvement across many codes with increased winning percentages, training attendance, rep selections and top 4 finishes for 5+ teams. An impressive achievement and direct reflection of the consistent efforts by our young men and talented coaching staff.

BASKETBALL
Currently the U15s are into top 8 playoffs, this is a very young team who often play against much older opponents - we are very proud of this team coached by Mr Lawry. Senior basketball are into their semi finals with an impressive top 4 finish! Andrew Koloamatangi and his team have played with pride, maturity and determination in 2016. Well done gentlemen and we hope to see you finish the task in the grand final!

RUGBY LEAGUE
Our 1st XIII have qualified straight through to the grand final at Mt Smart, finishing the regular season undefeated. This game willl be live streamed via Auckland league's website if you can't make it to the game- 7pm, Mt Smart #2 (O'rourke Rd), Wed 10th August.
Our Senior A/Reserves team finished 3rd in their section - playing against other school's top teams! The efforts have been awesome all year and we're excited to see these boys push into 1st XIII soon. Our U15 9's team also finished their season undefeated, only to lose the grand final 24-22 to Southern Cross. Sione Moala and his team will achieve great things in the future, they have worked hard with maturity, discipline and commitment. I'm confident the experience of 2016's season will contribute to their eventual success - watch this space.
RUGBY UNION
Our 1st XV and U15 teams have reached the end of their seasons. Whilst both teams missed out on finals in 2016, their behaviour on and off the field has been exemplary throughout. Both teams continued to improve throughout their seasons and always worked hard for each other and the St Paul's jersey.
Hold your heads up gentlemen - you did the school proud!
