Kick Start your way to good health

The WACRH Kick Start health and exercise program is for Geraldton residents who are currently not exercising due to ongoing chronic health issues and who would benefit from structured exercise program in a safe environment. Read more

Kids come to the crease

Children at Bluff Point Primary School have been enthusiastic participants in an after-school Cricket Skills and School Attendance Program. Sponsored by the Geraldton Sporting Aboriginal Corporation and Western Australian Cricket Association, the idea for the program was developed in conjunction with WACRH and the Bluff Point Primary School Aboriginal Parent group. Mount Magnet Community Trailer

The Mount Magnet Community Activity Trailer arrived at Bluff Point Primary School this week for a small send-off before making the journey out to Mount Magnet. WACRH and the Mt Magnet Shire worked together to acquire funding through Federal Member for Durack Melissa Price’s office to purchase the trailer. Set to be used at community events, the trailer holds sporting, musical and circus equipment.

NAIDOC Week celebrations

NAIDOC Week was acknowledged by WACRH staff with a Sports Day for children in Mount Magnet with games, healthy food and smoothies made on the blender bike. WACRH staff and students also contributed to the NAIDOC Week celebrations at Bluff Point Primary School in Geraldton.
EDUCATION

Georgetown University students

Last month WACRH welcomed students Eleanor and Amanda from Georgetown University in Washington DC. Both in their fourth and final year studying International Health, they will be spending 4 months on semester placement abroad with us conducting literature reviews, assisting with research projects and working on their paper for Georgetown University.

Mount Magnet connection

Edith Cowan University Speech Pathology student Amy Smith recently visited Mount Magnet whilst on placement with WACRH and found a family connection. In 1914, her great uncle Vincent was a hero aged ten. When his mother unexpectedly passed away, he saved his younger siblings by bringing them to his uncle’s mine seven kilometres away in a cart. Vincent was awarded two medals for his bravery.

Smart Health Symposium - Goodness Festival (Thursday 18 August)

Don’t miss the WACRH’s Smart Health Symposium! Join a range of experts with local insight and a global perspective on the latest innovations and best practice in Smart Health. Speakers will present on new apps and technology to assist with heart disease management through to creative activities with youth to improve wellbeing. Student Meeting Space – Interprofessional Practice: I didn’t know they did that! (12 August)

WACRH offers free, fortnightly interprofessional workshops are for ALL health science students on placement in the Midwest or currently studying in Geraldton. This workshop will challenge you to see your role as part of the interprofessional team and learn more about how to work collaboratively. Read more

Strengthen Your Legs (23 August)

The WACRH Strengthen Your Legs exercise program is aimed for Aboriginal people over 45 years of age. Come and have a go. Bring your friends, have some fun and get strong together.

Student Health Academy (2 & 9 September)

Ever thought of a career in Health or Medicine? Be part of the Student Health Academy for Years 10 & 11. Learn from health professionals about health careers in this fun and interactive two-day program. Learn from local health professionals about health careers, complete Basic Life Support Certification, and participate in fun, hands on skills sessions with health professionals. Read more

Standard Mental Health First Aid training - Geraldton (18-19 October)

Mental health first aid (MHFA) is the help given to someone developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis resolves. Facilitated by WACRH’s Mental Health Academic team May Donkin and Chantal Crinquand, this workshop is an accredited course based on the international MHFA Guidelines. Read more
