POWERING PERFORMANCE. INSPIRING EXCELLENCE
– A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

"A key characteristic of Canadian Olympians has always been resiliency and boy, did they show that today.

Canada's Women's Rugby Sevens courageously shook off a difficult defeat to Australia earlier in the day to capture BRONZE with a thunderous 33-10 victory over Great Britain. The Brits had defeated us yesterday by 22 points but were no match for our women today. What an amazing way for Canada to finish in the Rugby Sevens' inaugural Olympics.

Earlier, Canada's rowers had early setbacks and followed those up with great results in the Women's Lightweight Double Sculls and Men's Coxless Fours, while Women's Basketball had a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Serbia.

Our sport partner, Swimming Canada, continues to rack up the medals, this time with a Bronze in Women's 100m Backstroke.

We are so proud to work with these amazing athletes and sport organizations. Congratulations!

Wendy Pattenden
CEO, Canadian Sport Institute Pacific

Canada Captures Bronze Medal in Rugby Sevens in Rio

A furious first half from Canada helped the women’s rugby team to a historic first-ever bronze medal at the Olympic Games, beating Great Britain 33-10 on Monday in Rio de Janeiro’s Deodoro Stadium.

Canada lost their first game of the day in the semi-finals as they fell short 17-9 against the top-ranked Australian team. The Red & White quickly rebounded as four different players scored tries in the opening half of the bronze medal match.

The rugby sevens team were joined in Rio by Canadian Sport Institute Pacific staff Kirsten Barnes (Mental Performance), Tyler Goodale (Strength & Conditioning), Callum Morris (Performance Analyst), and Sandeep Nandhra (Athletic Therapist).

Canadian Boats Book Tickets to Semi-Finals in Rowing

Canada's lightweight women's double sculls team of Lindsay Jennerich (Victoria, BC) and Patricia Obee (Victoria, BC) advanced to the semifinals by winning their rowing heat at Lagoa Stadium. The pair were in third place at the halfway mark before picking up the pace on the home stretch and never looking back.

Conlin McCabe (Brockville, ON), Will Crothers (Kingston, ON), Tim Schrijver (Thedford, ON) and Kai Langerfeld (North Vancouver, BC) raced one of their best races this season, placing second in their men’s fours heat to qualify for the semi-finals.

The Men's Lightweight Four and Quadruple Sculls competed in a repêchage but were unable to advance.

Additional News:

Field Hockey
An incredible goalkeeping performance by David Carter (Vancouver, BC) was not enough for the Canadian men's field hockey team overcome a tough Argentina squad, as they fell 3-1.

Basketball

Kim Gaucher (Mission, BC), Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe (Penticton, BC) and Canada's women's basketball team improved to 2-0 in Rio as they erased an 18-point second half deficit to beat Serbia 71-67.

Beach Volleyball

Men's Team Chaim Schalk (Red Deer, AB) and Ben Saxton (Calgary, AB) went the distance in their first match-up of the Olympics before falling in three sets to Latvia late on Sunday night.
