Blossoms are bursting, LMCLP participants have just visited Canberra and as the new Spring season starts the vibrant and diverse communities across the Loddon Mallee Region are ramping up with community events, occasions and celebrations. The imminent arrival of the warmer months shakes off any hibernation-like moments and is always an exciting time for me personally and the communities I am involved in have so much on their calendars.
The past month has flown by and a genuine highlight was the VRCLP Leadership Summit in Bendigo. Such a terrific program of keynote speakers and concurrent sessions were available. Attendees were truly spoilt for choice. I would like to congratulate the Kat Baddeley and the VRCLP board (including our own Julie Slater) on the delivery of the summit.
It was the VRCLP Summit that has hatched a new leadership hashtag for me. Granted it still needs some socialization but it could get some traction. I joined an enthusiastic table during a workshop on Advocacy with James Ritchie, and this is when the hashtag emerged. Participants at our table described and compared communities that were devoid of leaders to that of a body without a heart beat. Bereft of a heartbeat, put simply, communities were not alive. Community leadership programs develop the leaders bringing life back to communities like the kiss of life. Before you know it the hashtag #LeadDontBleed was born. Without leaders the community was bleeding out.
Okay, okay I can see some readers shaking their heads with this one, but I can keep the dream of creating a movement and the resulting cry of “We’re trending!” alive surely?

Hi everyone,
Spring is definitely my favourite season - the farm is looking great, there is colour in the garden, the days are getting longer, and of course we begin recruiting for the next Loddon Murray Community Leadership Program (LMCLP).
This is always an exciting (and nerve-racking) time for us as we wait to see who is going to put up their hand to be part of the amazing LMCLP experience in 2017, and we call on all of our stakeholders (YOU) to help us promote and market the program far and wide across the region.
As you will see, our new website is now operational (after many months of hard work and the fantastic support of Brenton Johnson (LMCLP 2014)) and this contains a wealth of information about CLLM, LMCLP, and how and why people should apply to be a part of the program in 2017.
We have also just sent out an email to all our stakeholders and hope you are able to share this with your networks with a personal note from your self about why you would recommend the program to others.
A Big thanks to all those graduates who supported our "Big Give" crowdfunding campaign on 1 September where we managed to raise $900 towards a "Pay it Forward" scholarship for the 2017 program. A special thanks to the Fundraising Sub-Committee from this year's program who drove the campaign and who have also raised an additional $400 so far. You can support them by donating to our FRRR donation account. where all contributions are tax deductible and can only be used for scholarship purposes.
In closing, a quick shout out to anyone wanting to grow their governance skills to consider our Governance Masterclass in Elmore on 13 October where governance experts Nigel McGuckian, Julie Miller-Markhoff and Yvonne Wrigglesworth will join Mel and I to discuss all things governance.
And put Friday 11 November in your diary to join us for the 2017 LMCLP Graduation Evening which will be another great social networking event. I hope to see you there.

We are on our way home from our Canberra Study tour as I write. What an amazing pinnacle of the year for our participants, with many doors opened to places and people of power. What strikes me in Canberra is that we often feel humbled and grateful for the calibre of people we are able to meet, hear from, and be hosted by, but the feedback from them is always that they wholeheartedly welcome the opportunity to meet with and hear from us. This two-way exchange is a wonderful opportunity which the participants always take advantage of.
Hot topics for discussion on this trip included regional futures, water & climate futures, the dairy industry, same sex marriage, refugee policies and education. Participants visited the Australian War Memorial, the Australian Institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies, the American Embassy, the National Arboretum and of course Parliament House and, a highlight for many, Government House for a very special afternoon tea with and leadership address from the Governor General, Sir Peter Cosgrove.
Participants met with our local members of parliament as well as independents, small party and Nationals party members, and also heard from leaders of powerful lobby groups such as the ACT Council of Social Services, the AMA and the NFF, and from Indigenous leaders, Climate futures leaders, significant media players, Ethnic Council representatives, the Murray Darling Basin Authority, and the head of the Regional Australia Institute.
Many, many wonderful quotes but one to leave you with: “We get the politics we deserve: good people should step up if they want to see their values reflected in our Parliament” Andrew Broad, MP, Member for Mallee.

LMCLP graduates David Heath (2015) and Jacqueline Brodie-Hanns (2010) have joined forces to secure a funding boost for Harcourt. David’s 2015 Community Project was to create a green oasis in central Harcourt with an $18,000 plan to install irrigation at a key public park land. The project is a step closer to reality thanks to a $9,000 funding grant from the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities scheme and a $3,500 contribution from Coliban Water who will meet the expense of running water pipes to the area. The balance of funds are being raised by the Harcourt Progress Association where David and Jacqueline are active and involved members. Harcourt’s “green oasis” will create a pleasant and relaxing town centre park land, perfect for picnics, BBQs, events and celebrations, providing a great community meeting place for the town of Harcourt.

Jacqueline and David celebrate the funding announcement with other community members and local MP Lisa Chesters.

On the 31 August the Youth Leadership Program participants had their second webinar; Politics 101. This webinar was presented by the Hon. Peter Walsh, Leader of the Nationals, Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Shadow Minister for Water. It was a great opportunity to hear about the political system, how it functions (good/bad) and hear the Hon. Peter Walsh’s inspirational leadership story. The Canberra study tour has been re-scheduled to Melbourne, 21-24 September, and has the theme: Political Literacy and Social Justice.
We are looking forward to providing an update of this study tour in the next E-News.
