Social protection for Pakistan's informal labour
Pakistan's informal sector employs a staggering 20 million home-based workers (HBWs), 60 percent of whom are women. And that's the lower estimate - unofficial figures suggest that women make up 75 percent of all informal labour. Their contribution to the national economy is often undervalued and they are denied vital social protections, such as a minimum wage and social security. In a blog post for the Asian Development Bank, IGC Pakistan Country Economist Hina Shaikh writes on programs in Punjab and Sindh that are registering HBWs and training them with skills to access better jobs and social welfare. Shaikh identifies what further action needs to be taken.
