Welcome to this week’s e-news.
On Tuesday morning we had our Generation4Change NE committee meeting to discuss the schedule of events for the forthcoming months as well as next year’s Awards. We will be launching the 2017 G4C Awards in the autumn so please keep an eye out for further details. Sponsorship for the Awards and other G4C activities will also be announced shortly but if you are keen to find out more now then please contact Leanne.
We have also had meetings this week to discuss our Charity Golf Day with the Lighthouse Club. We only have a few team places remaining for the Golf Day in September which is taking place this year at Rockliffe Hall, so please book now to avoid disappointment.
This week we have also been supporting the National Association of Women in Construction North East and helping them plan for their Annual Dinner. The NAWIC Ball is kindly being sponsored by Esh Group and already has over 120 people attending. We had been asked if this event was ‘just for women’, I can assure you that it is a fun night and great for networking with clients and colleagues of all genders.
We are very excited for tomorrow as the day has finally arrived for our Charity Race Day with the Foundation of Light and The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation. We are delighted Lady Elsie is attending and also confirmed is Mark Allison of ‘Run Geordie Run’ fame as he is taking a brief break from his Around the World Run to make an appearance and fill us in on his recent adventures. BBC Total Sport will also be there and broadcasting their show live from the event. We are looking forward to seeing everyone and wish you the best of luck as you dabble on the horses!
Our event calendar restarts in September on Friday 9th with a return of First Friday Club which we host in association with Watson Burton. There are over 70 people registered and we are expecting a full house for this one, so make sure you register soon if you haven’t done so already.
Please remember to check out details on the North East Construction Summit as we have some fantastic speakers confirmed so far including Charles Mills of London Underground and Crossrail, Clive Johnson of Land Securities and also Chair for the Construction Clients Group. We will be inviting along regional case studies and many other speakers. Details on how to book below are below. We have some limited exhibition space available which also include places at the Summit, please speak to Leanne if you are interested in this.
We are continuing with our Member visits and would like to thank everyone we have seen so far and look forward to seeing you soon.
Best wishes
Catriona

Built Environment Professions working together on the Opportunities and Challenges of Brexit
Members of the Construction Industry Council (CIC) met on Wednesday 3rd August to discuss the opportunities and challenges posed by Brexit for the built environment professions and the potential added value of working collaboratively to maximise opportunities and deal collectively with the challenges.
Members agreed to provide policy input and support to the working groups established by Sir John Armitt with support from the ICE; and to other initiatives being developed by the Royal Academy of Engineering, the ACE, RIBA and RICS.
Another potential action is to use the wide database provided by the CIC membership of professional bodies in the built environment to gather data and information through regular surveys. Members also agreed to collect and disseminate data and information of value to the built environment professions and to share information amongst the professions.
To this end, CIC has today launched the first issue of BREXIT Digest, to be published regularly for its members and their members. BREXIT Digest is a round-up of the latest news and views about Britain’s withdrawal from the EU and how this impacts upon the built environment professions. The objective is to share information to ensure a mutual understanding of key issues.
To sign up to receive BREXIT Digest email enquiries@cic.org.uk with BREXIT digest in the subject line to request to be put onto the mailing list or for any enquiries you may have.

Desco Joins Larger Engineering Group
RAG Stiftung are a German based investment foundation who are developing a family of market leading consulting practices including Pell Frischmann and Dorsch, that operate independently across a number of international markets, but have the benefits of being in a larger long term trading group. RAG Stiftung was created as a foundation that would manage the environmental legacy of coal mining states in perpetuity, with the commitment of finding a socially acceptable means of ending the mining of coal in Germany by 2018. The company has since begun to form a family of consulting practices. Pell Frischmann was formed in 1926 under the leadership of Cecil Pell and merged to join RAG Stiftung in 2015. During 90 years of business, Pell Frischmann has expanded into the civil engineering company it is today, working across the roads, rail, water, and structures sectors in and beyond the UK. The Dorsch Gruppe was founded in 1951 and operates as a German based consultant engineering company which became part of the RAG Stiftung group in February 2016.
Multi-disciplined civil and structural engineers, Pell Frischmann lead the group’s interests in the UK and want to expand and attract other complementary businesses into the family. Desco will join as the group’s MEP consulting engineering practice, operating as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Pell Frischmann, providing MEP expertise.
The complementary strategic fit will allow Desco to remain independent, but develop an accelerated growth plan which includes new UK offices in both Leeds and Manchester over the next 12 months. Desco will receive the immediate benefit of Dorsch in the Middle East who are working on several major projects in Qatar and the wider GCC region.
The management team are delighted with the news and all will remain in place to help deliver this new and exciting phase of development for Desco.
