Makevention 2016: A Day of Do-It-Yourself Spirit
What happens when the most innovative builders, programmers, and crafters around show off their latest projects in the same place—and let you join in the fun? Makevention!
Again this year, the Library and local hackerspace BloomingLabs team up to bring Makevention to the Monroe County Convention Center on Saturday, August 27. Whether you’re a fan of the maker movement, or just curious about creative approaches to tools and materials—you’ll find lots of inspiration and entertainment at Makevention, where masters of high-tech applications like robotics and 3D printing exhibit alongside devotees of time-honored arts like soapmaking, textiles, and armored battle!
Also among the highlights this year are demos by the new Make Innovate Learn Lab at Indiana University, an outdoor human foosball table, and a 10-year anniversary exhibit by Trashion Refashion, Bloomington’s annual runway show featuring clothing made from discarded items. And don’t miss the virtual reality games and portable recording studio, provided by the Library’s own Level Up crew! Local food trucks and other vendors are onsite as well.

Library Welcomes New Associate Director
The staff and Board of Monroe County Public Library are pleased to welcome Jane Cronkhite as the new Associate Director. She started her new position on August 1.
“Jane’s passion for serving the community makes her a great fit for Associate Director and Monroe County,” notes director Marilyn Wood. “She cares deeply about building community relationships and brings a substantial background in planning, budgeting, and delivering high quality library service.”
This is a homecoming for Cronkhite, who was raised in Monroe County. In fact, Cronkhite’s first job in libraries was at MCPL’s Ellettsville Branch. Most recently, she was a Community Librarian for the Santa Clara County Library District in California, where she directed the activities of the Campbell Library. Her accomplishments include working on Campbell’s Civic Center Master Plan, aligning Library goals with the City’s, and managing initiatives supporting early literacy learning though digital resources.
Prior to joining the Santa Clara County Library, she was Acting Senior Librarian for San José Public Library in California and Public Services Librarian for Cuyahoga County Public Library in Ohio. Cronkhite has a B.A. from Indiana University Bloomington and M.L.I.S. from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

Radical Fun

Creative Movement for Kids
Dancer and gymnast Jacqueline Cushman leads fun, creative movement activities designed to stimulate the brain and body. Drop in. For ages 3–6. It’s 1:30–2 p.m. at the Ellettsville Branch –or– 3–3:30 p.m. in the Children’s Program Room at the Main Library Sunday, August 14.
Autism-Friendly Movie: Big Hero 6
Lights slightly up, sound slightly down—nobody minds if you talk or move around. Drop in. For age 5 and up. It’s 6 p.m. Wednesday, August 17 in the Auditorium at the Main Library.
Storyhour Extravaganza
Stories, songs, films, and fun. This month’s theme: Dog Days. Groups welcome. Please register. For ages 2–6. It’s 10–11 a.m. Wednesday, August 31 in the Auditorium at the Main Library.
