JOIN US for our 4th annual day of connecting the Bed-Stuy community by bringing art outside

STooPS 2016
Sunday August 14th @ 12pm

with showcases by artists of all genres & generations

Brooklyn, NY - GET READY FOR STooPS 2016 - the 4th annual day of art outside connecting Bed-Stuy neighbors, homeowners, artists, and businesses. We invite SightSeers to experience the soul of Bed-Stuy while enjoying live music, visual art, theater, poetry, and dance; shopping at local businesses; and, engaging with neighbors in the community.

With the support of our generous sponsors, our SightSeer Map & Schedule will be FREE. It can be picked up in person or downloaded from the STooPS website on the day of the event. The map will offer more information about the artistic showcases and highlight neighborhood businesses where audiences can grab snacks, coffee, and local goodies.

SightSeer Schedules can be picked up at Brooklyn Swirl (445 Marcus Garvey Blvd), Fulton Bikes (1580 Fulton St), Bailey’s Cafe (324 Malcolm X Blvd), or Bed-Stuy Fresh and Local (210 Patchen Ave) starting at 12:00pm.

We are excited to showcase the work of new artists like soulful choreographer Angie Pittman, eco-conscious visual artist Kiarra Elliott, and the talented young students of The Brooklyn Music School. We also welcome back creatives with deep ties to the neighborhood, including international artist-activist Wéma Harris, poet and novelist Nicholas Powers, and award-winning playwright Andrea Fulton.

Get to know them all at www.stoopsbedstuy.org/stoop-artists.

Our Kiddie Corner returns this year making STooPS a day the whole family can enjoy. Stop by the Macon Library (361 Lewis Ave) for movement and crafts with Preschool Rock!. With five hours of STooP experiences, from 12:00-5:00pm, there's plenty of time to engage with the diverse collection of artists who are graciously sharing their work with the Bed-Stuy community for another summer!

It is an honor to spend a fourth year connecting with the homes, businesses, and artists that make Bed-Stuy a unique, intimate, and cultured neighborhood. Take a stroll around the block, see some old friends, make some new ones, and enjoy everything this old-school neighborhood has to offer.

SEE YOU ON AUGUST 14th!

About STooPS

STooPS incubates art at home by sharing resources and re-imagining ice-broken spaces for public engagement. Bed-Stuy grown and artist-instigated, STooPS is a conduit for community building and intentional artistic experimentation.

During our annual STooPS event, we use the arts to bring people outside and promote social interaction among artists, homeowners, residents, and businesses of Bed-Stuy. Every summer since 2013, Bed-Stuy homeowners have collaborated with local artists to host performances and art showcases on their stoops, storefronts, yards, or sidewalks. To encourage family-wide participation, our Kiddie Korner features various children's art activities.

Recent changes in demographics and economics have evolved the fabric of our neighborhood. STooPS builds on the unmistakable Bed-Stuy identity and bridges the gap between Bed-Stuy “then” and “now.” It is a tangible way to unite artists, new residents, businesses, and those deeply invested in the neighborhood such as homeowners and community organizations. STooPS supports neighborhood stakeholders by sharing the multitude of resources that exist in our backyard.

Now in its fourth year, STooPS has been a huge success, connecting 8 organizers, over 100 artists, 75 Bed-Stuy homeowners, 40 local businesses, 75 volunteers and approximately 600 attendees. The event has been featured in DNAInfo, the BK Reader, Brokelyn, A.R.T.S.Y. Magazine, and covered by News12 Brooklyn. The STooPS team is ecstatic about engaging the Bed-Stuy community for yet another year.

STooPS fosters meaningful interactions in (un)conventional venues that are mutually beneficial for artists and neighbors. It is just one way to engage, support, and develop Bed-Stuy, and as we expand, the entire Brooklyn community grows stronger.
